Hi everyone

I recently fitted a new engine and i did post a thread about the engine smoking which i found out was because the valve stem seals kept lifting up. However i have another problem.

The engine is spluttering when on boost and sometimes the boost spikes. It also hesitates when trying to rev it from idle and spits back into the carb. I thought it was a fueling issue and have just fitted a brand new regulator but that isnt the problem. I have also tried different mixture settings. Or could it be something to do with the turbo and boost/vacumm hoses.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Adam

Id suggest you take it to a rolling road and have it setup by someone. It might cost you 100 quid but itll save you money in the long run.

yeah theres oil in the dashpot and its fitted with megajolt and currently running the standard metro turbo ignition map.

I did have it running ok before and it was boosting fine. The only thing ive changed is the rockers, from high lift ones to some 1.3 roller rockers.

When you changed the rockers did you drain the water??

Did you change the gasket or leave it? It may be that when changing the rockers you disturbed the sealed gasket.

My money is on it being weak mixture, possibly made worse by wrong/insufficient oil in the dashpot.

lean mixture. Ive got the same problem atm at a certain throttle point. How did u stop ur stem seals pushing up?

I kept pushing them back down with a screwdriver but within 2 minutes of running they were back up again. So i changed all the seals by making this tool that levered off the head studs and compressed the valve springs. The only thing is i had to fill the bore with string to stop the valve dropping down (i was too lazy to take the head off) I also changed the rockers as well from some high lift ones to some 1.3s and now its stopped smoking completely. but i have looked again and one has pushed back up! so its staying there for the moment.

i was thinking of doing the same as its a basterd to take head off. So did u push a roll of string then push the piston up to the valves?

yeah you just have to keep feeding the ball of string in, it does take a lot. I moved the piston up first and used a screwdriver to pack it in tight.

Lil tip me and dad made an adaptor out of a old spark plug with a male air line connector and used air pressure in the cylinder to hold the valve up, worked a treat!

If in doubt... flat out! The words of a true legend

Worst case if you drop a valve head off.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.
