The MPI tanks have some bitument sound deadening on the outside and are baffled inside so weight quite a bit more than the SPI items.

The SPI pump can deliver about 1bar of fuel pressure whereas the MPI one can deliver about 3bar (i think)

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I must have an SPi one then because its just metal all round - 1 bar should be enough for a metro turbo engine though right?

OK on low boost. 1 bar is about 14psi. You need to run your fuel pressure at 3.5psi + boost, so for 8psi of boost you need 11.5psi of fuel pressure.

Once you've had 8 psi though, you'll realize it's not enough. *wink*

It's not all bad though, you can just replace the pump with one from a fuel injection car (civic, fiesta, puma etc) and keep the nice feed/return setup. Have a search a few people have done it *smiley*

Tried doing a search and couldn't find what I wanted easily.

I have an SPI tank and pump and would like to uprate it.

Two questions:

Can you change just the pump that sits in the tank from the SPI one to the MPI one easily?

If not, can you remove the SPI pump and use a different, external, pump but keep the fitting into the tank for the feed and return?

Sorry for the hijacking.

you can stick the MPI pump in or one from a fiesta or similar, esentially any intank inlection pump can be made to fit pretty easily.

The MPi tank has a shorter filler neck. The filler cap sits much closer to the body.

I'm using a ford pump fuel pUmp in mine, it's an easy swap. Just take the top cover off the tank, lift out the old pump, unclip it (easier said than done, buts it's not complicated) and refit the pump pump in it's place. I removed the pump but left the original pipe work in as I though it better.

It'll become clear when you look at it in front of you. Just make sure the gasket is good on the cover before re fitting

I get a bit worried about internal fuel pumps and also buying second hand. As I am rebuilding my car from the wheels up, I would prefer to buy new.

What would you guys do? Would you buy a new civic/ford internal fuel pump (like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WALBRO-255-FUEL-PUMP...item56353c635e) or would you remove the pump from the SPI tank and fit an external pump (like this http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?ty=...d=35668&title=).

If it was designed to go inside a tank, then putting a new one inside the tank seems sense to me

Is that an uprated flow pump Gavin?

I'm using the Walbro 255, but I know the standard SPi injection manifold regulator never liked it. I think its to do with the set pressure since the Walbro 255 is roughly 255 liters per hour at 3 bar, but at 1 bar, the flow will be greater, so the regulator really needs to be able to flow such volume, and the return really needs to be un restrictive.
