Im thinking of doing a fibreglass/carbon front end to save weight. Just wondered if anybody has bothered to weight a standard front end and a fibreglass one to see what difference it makes?

Cheers

My 1 piece fibre glass front weights 14kg with mk1 grill and headlamps. Brace bars 2.5kg each.

Abs, not bad quality, but alot of work to get a good fit. You have alot of cutting to do. I'd also recommend fitting it with a engine in place. Mine sits lower than steel bonnet line and just clears rad. Matt

I'm personally of the opinion that unless your front end is rusty leave it, Your car looks nice and subtle.

Having helped a mate fit and trim one of these fibreglass front ends I decided never to fit one to my car considering how hard it is to get a decent fit.

My heavy duty 2 piece fg front + brace bars, from arc angels, weighs still significantly less than my old steel roundnose i cut off. But if youre fussy about panel gaps and fitment id forget about it, they're a complete and utter arse to fit, although i imagine it may be easier retaining steel a panels, i went for fg.

Well according to mini mag, which is more or less a TM special with johns gold twink turbo on the front, there are some weight saving tables, they say a std steel front end inc bonnet is 15.5kg and a carbon one is 2.5kg!!(sounds a bit on the light side to me that!) a saving of 13kg, just a bonnet is 5.5kg steel and 1.2 carbon. its issue 170, a handy issue for the weight concious amongst you :)

Read that issue it is very good. goes from the nice easy weight removing techniques such as removing the rear seats to full on all guns blazing how deep are your pockets weight removing.

The turbo build has finally started

I am concerned about how it looks. I think i want the impossible and make it so you cant tell that its a plastic front end.
At the stage im at with the weight loss 10kg is now a big jump down and think its the best value for money idea
