Right ive been searching and can only find one topic on the site related to diff shims

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=3740

It didnt help..... Nor did my haynes manual - all that says in the stripdown section is to take the old ones off and put them back when you are rebuilding, doesnt atually say how to shim up the diff.

So how do I do it properly?

I only ask cause the diff i have just rebuilt didnt have any on at all. I do have some spare off an old gearbox but didnt just want to put them on, thought it was best to check first.

Cheers Guys

Its in the haynes book, basically you bolt the rear cover on loose and measure the gap under the tangs on the side covers

Yes that is common, the newer Haynes is rubbish and hardly tells you anything about more involved stuff. Mini one is bad, early one tells you about full gearbox strip and rebuild. Peugeot 205 manual is the same as well, later one crap.

stowmaket suffolk

if i remember right its a 2-3 thou preload.

eg measure the gap with one gasket on, fit the other side cover with out one, measure your gap between the bearing and tang then measure your gasket.

so if the gap is 14 thou say, your gasket is 11 thou which gives you a gap of 3 thou then add the 3 thou preload then that means you want 6 thou of shims.

but the preload is only a guess as i always look before i carry this out as the mind is not always clear after a few lemon sherbets.lol

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

If you have got it, "How to Modify your Mini" by Dave Vizard also has a good description of how to shim the diff.
