I combined rebuilding the defender hubs with dismantling a mini gearbox

Blimey, some great lash ups !

I've been thinking for ages about a safe 'garage bench method' to remove or re-tighten the pinion and 1st motion nuts on a standard garage workbench, assuming a reasonable vice is bolted through it at one end.

Would the following method work, and if so, would someone be willing to try it out !!??

1. Strip box from engine and remove diff side covers and rear diff housing then lift out crownwheel assembly and output shafts complete.

2. Re-install bare rear diff housing and loosely re-tighten all bolts/nuts.

3. Insert a long piece of 6x4 pine, say about 2 ft long, through one of the open side cover aperatures and tighten up the rear diff cover bolts to nip up the wood until it gets gently crushed. Not too much mind, just enough to nip it good and tight.

4. Resting the box on a workbench, grip the unclamped end of the wood in the vice which is securely bolted through the workbench as usual. Yank on the handle until that wood's screaming !

5. Put the fuck off socket on the pinion nut or first motion shaft nut and remove it with a 3 ft breaker bar.

Theoretically, as you apply torque to the nut with the breaker bar, the gearbox should safely swivel on the wood and take up a naturally held position either on the bench or underneath the vice against the side of the bench allowing you to apply as much effort on the breaker as you want (assuming you dont rip the bolts out holding the vice to the bench !).

If bolted with fuck off bolts, you should be able to get at least 350 lbft of torque through the socket before the bench gives up.

Is someone able to test my theory as I dont have a spare box to try it myself ?

Cheers.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

Four bolts through the dowel holes into anchor bolts in the garage floor concrete, with some thick penny washers between, 3/4" drive 4 ft breaker bar. Never had a problem.

Thats never going to work, especially with a bar that long (that's got to be a straight lb for lb bar) lol. Newtons third law; every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Try sitting on it, grab the back edge with one hand, and a very long wrench the other hand, and pull up on both hands at the same time. This method doesnt really work undoing the nuts, but is usually fine tightening them. Just dont giver yourself a hernia!

Standing on it does not work. If you think it does, then your torque wrench is faulty.

Remember to lock it in 1st and 4th:

Just stick mine under the 4 poster ramp, I have had bastards though. Ive bent breaker bars, jumped up and down on scaffold poles the lot. Patience is the key, they come undone eventually.

Fair enough but you might have fallen off said box and twisted your ankle *wink* That input gear nut doesn't have much on it and easilly slips. The pic made me giggle though *hehe!*

Why struggle applying 150lb or more of force on the bar you are using in that pic. You'll give your self a hernia bent over and crunched up like that, You'll only do that the once, when you only need to apply 50lb with a fairly cheep tool of choice and another way to hold the box, simple made tool that bolts to either the speedo housing or transfer housing fixings for one.
