I know you do a bit at a time to stop the panels distorting, but do you weld an @ 1" wide strip on the inside too.

What about the below boot bit where 3 layers join.

*oh well*

The rear lip is easy... just grind back the lip, which is three layers of metal (valance, boot floor and hinge pannel) then seam weld.

The body I did from the inside where possible as its easier to get a strong weld. I also reinforced the rear seams with a few extra strips.

Distortion was minimal but weld a max of 2" and then letting the pannel cool. You can get away with doing top then bottom. I also used the trick of weld 2" miss 2".

You HAVE to be good at welding thou, or the whole car is going to fall apart on you!!

Great idea welding from inside,I had practise on my spare half a shell from the outside with not much joy as the wire kept going through the gap, prob remove the inners behind rear window too

Not bovvering with the roof, and the front is only windscreen length as getting flipfront with a panels attached

Would welding a 1" strip on the inside of the grinded seam then mig welding the outside to finish off the weld then grinding it down work or would it not be strong enough. I would be doing this at a length at a time to make sure there is no distortion within the shell.

as alex, i welded from the inside where possible before i even started to grind away the seams. then where you cant get to you just grind away a bit of the seam, weld. leave it, then do more.

i am abit unhappy with a few parts where they were done from the outside and then ground back and now that i have access to all of the seam i will be putting some light plating in for that extra bit of peace of mind.

Ah yes i see what you mean now instead of faffing about with a strip of unsupported metal it is already joined together from the inside,
Thankyou very much.

I ground off a few 2 inch sections along the boot seam, then welded those, ground off the rest, then welded it all.

So it was never a loose panel like you say.

Not sure about the rest of the car. I know when its done you use a chisel or something to knock the two meeting panels in abit as fill the 'dent' with weld, otherwise you have your welds sticking out shit loads.

i was looking at mine the other day and seriously thinking of roof chopping...then i thought i cant be assed with all that extra hassle, and it would look abit out of proportion with a large clubby front on it.

I quite like it on some minis, gives it that sort of hot rod look I think.

Depends what the rest of the cars like though as to whether it looks good im my opinioinoion.

i havent really seen it done on a clubby, and picturing it in my head it looked all abit too long. you would have to go quite wide for it to start to make sense and look really nice. IMO but hey, that was all just from a picture in my head! alcohol has already damaged that!!!
