Hi all, I'm thinking of saving myself some money and lightening my flywheel myself, I have access to a lather at work and wanted to know the areas where material can be taken off.

Can anyone show me on a picture??

Basically I kept the clamping area the same thickness and just took the weight off the outer section. 4lbs (1.8kgs) in total.

That's spot on you done a nice job there. What style of chuck did you use just a 3 jaw self centering with the drive face against the chuck?

Cheers for you help matty

I think it was a 3 jaw may of been a four jaw though. Yep I clamped it on the external part of the jaws on the centre dia, with the drive face against the chuck.

what you really need to do is get a DTI on the clutch face and get that so it has no runout.

you should really get it balanced after,

I've heard stories of people lightening the flywheel themselves and did it wrong, when they were driving along it broke up and came through the bulkhead and took one of there foot off?

Maybe a rumor/urban myth but i'd prefer to buy one based on that

I will def have it balanced but I cant see a problem with lightening it myself and aslong as you don't take material off the rear of the pressure plate face it will be fine. sounds abit extream about breaking up and coming through the cabin

Ps Matty have you git any measurements of how much material was taken off?
Cheers Rick

I forgot to mention to get it balanced. I did with mine, but it ended up being completely balanced even after machining.

I have heard about flywheel exploding etc...but never seen or know anyone that its happend to. If you take to much metal off then it could happen, but the amount everyone has taken off theres on here are on the safe side.

EDIT: Unfortunately I don't have any measurements. *oh well*

Did you balance yours yourself? Or engineering shop? Aslong as its lighter than standard I'm not to worried about going extream just abit more pick up would be nice.

I do it roughly to the pics you posted and weigh it after, thanks for your help again

I got it balanced at an engineering place, but they told me it was spot on, so they didn't do anything to it.

The flywheel is on loan at the moment so isn't on my car anymore, but when I get it back I can take some measurements...won't be for a few month yet though.

Does anybody know the standard weight of a verto flywheel? I had a go at lightening last night at work and got it down to 4.54 with ring gear

Is this good I should have weighed it before hand but time was short :)
Cheers Rick
