Hi i have a 1380 turbo and i have recently taken the engine out to change the final drive and dry deck the head and block. The engine is now back in the car and i was taking it for a drive today and was driving about 15 mins when i decided to stop for fuel. When i went to start it again the engine won't turn over at all, tried rolling it in 4th and its just seized solid. When i switched it off the engine did run on for a couple of seconds which doesn't normally happen.

I have since taken the starter motor off to see if that was jamming, nope. ive had all the sparkplugs out and looked down the bores but nothing. The car rolls in gear with the clutch depressed and somebody helped me to try and bump start it but it just locked the wheels straight up.

Any ideas? Im really pissed off with it to be honest because i was meant to be doing london to brighton this weekend but it doesn't look like thats gonna happen now.

I know, im gonna take the engine out tomorrow but its weird that it was running fine one minute and the next its seized. It didn't get hot and the oil pressure was good

My brother once broke a crank which seized the engine as the two pieces rotated against each other and jammed in the crank case.

took us ages to work it out, but was an easy fix.

Northamptonshire.

Might not be engine :) did you miss a thrust washer or something out in the gear box?

But it rolls with the clutch disengaged, so unlikely.

Can't be gearbox as "The car rolls in gear with the clutch depressed".

I'd expect crankshaft bearing (probably main, not big end) or possibly even camshaft bearing (although very rare on a large bore).

Did you replace any of the bearings whilst it was apart (I assume you took everything out of the block to plug all the holes).

EDIT - Wil beat me to it re. the gearbox....

if the only thing you did was dry deck it then the only thing i can think of, is a bit of swarf has got somewhere it shouldn't of. *oh well*

Before pulling the engine out, whip the rocker cover off and check nothing has come loose in the valve train.

Try taking the starter motor out and see if it will turn over in gear when you push it. It will be easier in 3rd or 4th with the plugs out IF its going to move.

Right, after checking everything i possibly could with the engine in i have now taken the engine out and found the problem. The centre mains bearing has wiped due to no lubrication. I have taken the pressure relief valve out to find a lump of swarf behind the ball, meaning that the valve could of been stuck open and starving the crank of oil. The crank doesn't look to bad so hopefully a quick polish and some new bearings and it will be ok.

Ouch!

Bad luck buddy, an advertisement for meticulous cleaning after machining if there ever was one!

Loss of oil damage and crank mains are allways the first.

Bad luck, but as already said, clean all oilways out after any machining work.

yep it must be from me machining for the dry deck. Although i was very careful. The crankshaft i think is now scrap because i noticed the flywheel has fretted on the taper and mullered it. Also there are a few scores on the big ends as well. So it will definitely need a regrind at best but not so sure about the taper

Looks like it was swarf then, thats a bugger!

Looks like you're cracking on with it though, still plenty of time before L2B.
