is there any way the mods could come up with something to help prevent us getting ripped off when purchasing items. i know it cant be 100% stopped but something like you cant sell untill 150 posts or something like that so they have to be involved in the forum ect before just selling i know its more fool us buying from a first post seller.but just a thought

I know TMF have a 150 post minimum, and I can see the point. But I always assumed that this was more to do with the free use of advertising space, rather than security.

If something looks too good to be true, and it someone with only a few posts, you take a chance, or you don't.

Is there a problem that needs solving or is it a few isolated incidents?

im a member of a few different forums not just mini and other cars and have noticed that on some you cant see certain section of the forum untill you have either been a member for a set time or have a set number of messages, posts. the only reason iv said it is that iv only been a meber for almost 2 years now but have noticed this problem happening more and more as the mini parts are getting rarer and harder to obtain. just food for thought that was all any little that helps us all out the better

if you employ a minimum number of posts before you can post in certain sections you'll end up with new members posting rubbish just to increase their post count. better off introducing a golden member system where you pay an annual fee for the right to sell.

this is a tough one. We want to protect ourselves, sellers and buyers. I've seen some forums that indeed don't allow posting in the for sale section until you've been on for a period of time or post count. I like this to an extent, however i'm sure there are well respected members on this forum with relatively low post counts but have been using the forum for years.

On the other side of the coin, I had an old saab engine i was looking to off load and it was suggested i went onto the vauxhall forums; quite rightly they wouldn't let me post in the for sale section for this reason, a bit frustrating for me as it was a bargain for someone but i could completely understand why they were doing it.

I like the donation idea.

Where i'm getting to is that there are pros and cons to every 'solution'. As Wil has pointed out, buyer beware when it comes to a deal too good to be true. Cash on collection is also a good idea

and never send money as a gift via paypal unless you're 100% certain they're legit! seems obvious but people get caught out all the time.

I have never had a problem yet on here. As said cash on collection or paypal seem the best ways...

I also like the donation idea, I think it's great. This may help go further to discouraging 'hit and run' posters in those sections.

I personally get fed up of directing new members as well as the 'hit and run' culprits to the for sale rules, which should be read as a matter of course before making a thread in the seller section of the forum.

But hey, that's my job along with the other mods/admins :) I'm sure 90% of rule breaking cases are purely by accident, whether they did not notice the rule thread, or for some other reason.

I just use my nose to sniff out the bullshit and pricks and so far it's worked for me.

I've not had any trouble buying or selling on here but have sold on other forums & ebay where I have had some right dick heads and chancers.

Why not use common sense? YOU can see how many posts people have made, how long they have been registered for etc.

If you're unsure, either don't purchase, or pick up in person.

How about a bit of common sense?

If you don't know the other party, then treat the deal as you would with any classified ad.

Don't assume that if they post on here they must be good guys.

Saul Bellow - "A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep."
Stephen Hawking - "The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge."

Common sense is by far the best solution.

It's something that is used less and less. Everyone loves to have someone to blame and take compensation for things that could easily be avoided.

It's not nice to be a victim of dishonesty like this. But as above, there are lots of ways to avoid it.

We really don't want the responsibility to be on TM and its moderators.

This.

Only blind buy anything up to a value of money you are prepared to lose. This is simple common sense internet forum or no internet forum. To be honest I think you have a fucking cheek to say that "the mods" should "do something about it". Remember that this forum is run by volunteers who do it for the love of the place and nothing else.

Although I don't agree with the morals, paypal provide very good protection to buyers, so stand the extra few percent cost and if in any doubt pay via paypal "goods" and NOT "gift".
