Even the most powerful cars on here don't damage ordinary straight cut gears, so not sure really who they are aimed at.

Correct, but its nice to see newer developments. Still been work on.. I would spend your money on a minispares clubman set, and just run the helical drops, they will survive and its been well proven with power outputs over 190 HP and over 5000 miles, the SC gearset can't climb over themselves, with the torque output from the engine tranfering to the drop gears and to the SC gears in the box. Plus they are very quite, you dott get screaming like the SC drops

Simon, I'm watching your gearbox as may well be interested at the right price. Perhaps give the drop gears a miss though after Benross' comments above.

i think the helical ones are quieter due to the larger contact area. My build thread..

No, I think it's because the two faces of a helical gear mesh progressively, whereas in straight cut gears the two flat faces slap against each other. That being the case, the noise would be unabated with the wider gears. Perhaps just a different pitch. On 24th Dec, 2008 Nic said:

I just run normal size drops in mine so that gives you an idea what the normal ones take. Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph

I like that they have thought out side the box to bring improvements but imo the normal sized ones are good enough for now proven by the fact alot of users on here at or above 200nanas have not seen failures that i known of

The good thing with this new setup is that it makes the casing survive if anything goes wrong with the idler.

So spoke with MED today regarding a complete new box for the Frog, given that they are a recommended supplier on Slark Race Engineering's website and I hold them in high regard. I said having mashed the laygear in my standard SPi box, I was looking to upgrade to straight cut as a minimum, plus whatever else they recommended. Was surprised to hear Steve at MED say that in his opinion the drop gears are the weak point (I'm also running standard drops at the moment) and that the new roller bearing wider variant was brought in to deal with an Achilles heel even for the straight cut variant. He was surprised that my box has failed in the manner it has.

I use the older med roller bearing drops. They haven't caused any problems and I'm not over worried that they will break either. I did change the bearing when I rebuilt the box last year.

I wonder what they'd make of Roberts helical drops and 230 odd nanas.
