Alright guys,

How do you get the inner race off the crown wheel, once the outer race comes off with the bearing puller,

I think I have used a sharp cold chesil in the past to tap down the back but not having any joy with this one ?

Ideas please ?

Thanks

Brocky

BTW - I took my buddy VTEC Pete out for a spin this weekend, and even though I am running her in, he gave it a name, the "Brocket"...cause I'm a brocket maaannn, nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah....

Just to say I just removed my swiftune heavy duty diff bearing no trouble at all from the crown wheel on my quaife, with a 3 leg puller....

The difference being that the outer race is double sided, not one sided like the standard diff bearings....

Ive ground through one side of the inner race to free them a few times before

I seriously doubt it!

As Dave says. Grind down to near the i/d of the inner race. You know when you are close as the material gets thin and starts to go blue/yellow colours with the heat from the grinder. Once it is thin enough it will yield and allow you to tap if off with a chisel or wedge down the back, without having to go right the way through.

I have a special chisel. Always gets them off, occasionally needs a little bit of fire to help it on it's way.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I put an exhaust clamp around the bearing race, a thick washer on the crownwheel and use a three legged puller.
Simples.

Alright Gents,

Thanks for all the suggestions and help :)

I did look at my grinder, and then I looked at my half built gearbox and block on the bench, then looked at the rain outside....

Not wanting to grind in doors near the new build, and whilst waiting for the rain to stop I realized that the standard outer race can be refitted fairly easily the wrong way around complete with ball races, thus giving a shoulder to pull on.

The only trouble was that you have to remove the crown wheel retaining bolts first, which means you then have to have some thing for the 3 leg puller to react against in the center.

I spotted my flywheel puller and hey presto cleanly removed a very stuborn inner race (which has been is place since 1979, but only 27k miles box)....although did go with quite a "crack" initially.

I actually think the bearing could be reused in a standard application, as still seems smooth and happy,

All in all quite pleased with my self lol:)

Ps like all the other ideas, especially the tyre levers / exhaust clamp, the chisel method has always been my prefererred but this seemed quite clean even as a last resort in this case.

Also I think if I had a short peice of round stock that would fit inside the ID of the inner race this would also be a suitable reaction point, for future reference.

Cheers

Cool,

Yeh I guess there is more than one way to skin a cat, :)

I did try that but the puller slipped off,

The best solution is to use heavy duty bearings that are dual sided on the outer race :)
