Alright guys

Just blocking off my speedo drive since I am not running a cable just now,

I have taken out the square drive that has the pinion gear on the end but since the engine is in the car cant get the other shaft / gear out that is driven by the mainshaft in the gear box.

Does it matter ? I mean can I run it with out the little gear in with out any issues ?

Obviously I will take out the other shaft next time the motor is out

Cheers

It should be fine, it cant go anywhere. One end seats in the end of the gearbox casing/ speedo drive housing, the other end of the shaft slots into the end of the mainshaft so it cant go anywhere

Ps did you take the smaller gear with the square drive out with the engine insitu? My speedo has gone , the cable looks ok, stripped it out and checked it and it looks ok, but plan to change this anyway. When i put my gearbox together the speedo gears they didnt feel 'right' but thought they would mesh. Going to change the smaller plastic gear if possible when i change the speedo cable. Otherwise its the clocks that have gone!!

Thanks Dan,

I just had a look at a spare box after posting, I agree, I just fitted an alloy blank, my cable broke.

I am pretty good at gauging the speed off the rpm in top gear,

I am trying to fix an oil leak coming some where from the LH side, but only leaks after driving, not on tick over.

If this hasn't fixed it, gonna have to pull off the timing cover, as I don't think its the drive shaft oil seal...

I took it out on situ, although I have no inner wings and FG front end so went in from the side.

Removed gasket / cleaned the gasket face before pulling the drive out in an attempt to stop any crud falling into the gb.

I also had an oil leak this side. Turned out the oil cooler was split, if you run one check it, was almost disasterous for me. Checked all the usual suspects but thats what it came down to!!

I'd leave the worm in there anyway. Then if for any reason your pinion nut comes undone it can't go for a ride around your engine.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.
