I'm currently working on a gt17 downpipe to work with my manifolds and wondering who would be interested in one? I'm still looking at ways of doing them, one option is to modify a standard saab downpipe, but I'm now considering making them from scratch out of stainless as it may be just as easy, but will require a fair amount tooling to making some of the parts.

A couple of questions:

what size exhaust centre section are most people using? 2" I guess?

Would it be preferable to have some kind of flexi joint or not?

Where do most people mount the lambda sensor? Mine is on the turbo outlet bend, but I seem to remember a fair amount of people fitting them nearer bend just before the centre section?

Cheers
Matt

Definitely interested in ss one, for up coming GT17 conversion,

Running a T3 with avonbar 2" down pipe with the center section sliding over next to remote, my lambda is just after the bend but before the ball / socket joint

I was thinking could just cut down the first section before the bend and have the new elbow slide over with slots and u- bolt

Full length would be nice to, joints are good for letting you tweak the position when fitting, however I bet most of us have pretty solidly mounted motors so perhaps not essential ?

The short one would be cheaper to ship to the states :-p

Cheers

As I'm sure you know Matty, the GT17 outlet is 2.25inch pipe. I use a short flanged length then reduce before the join to 2".

I tried to buy the triangular clamp off the shelf recently and couldn't find one. I got one close in the end that needed minimal mods.

Maybe with more searching, you could find a standard clamp that will save you having to make them?

I personally think solid would be fine, looking at most widebands they recommend placement be some distance from the turbo, however we never had an issue in the elbow on the van. If making from scratch I would be inclined to place the sensor somewhere near the standard gear selector (Andy pointed out to me then you can run the wiring in through the reverse light bung). I would also say most applications use a 2" exhaust system (this will also give you enough room to get past the pot joint I guess)

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I would be interested depending on time scale, im running a play mini system which connects over a standard LCB so would assume 2".

I was looking at buying a complete saab 9000 turbo down pipe (£40) with the lamba sensor just after the turbo and modifing the rest of the system to suit with no flexible union.

Ok the is for the feedback lads.

Wil - yeah mine is a 2 1/4 inch, as I need to make there flared end up I was planning on making this separate and then welding it onto the bend, so I could either do it 2 1/4 and slip it over a 2" bend and weld or, maybe make a 2 stage flare that goes straight from 2" to the 2 1/4 bell on the turbo. Will have to make some mandrels up and see how well they form.

Sounds like the lambda boss is best fitted nearer the join then, although I suppose it could be put anywhere without any more effort.

Brocky - I can see what you are saying about multiple sections, one of the main advantages is the flexibility in installment although It is another place to potentially leak from! The good thing about the gt17 is the the clamp is separate from the downpipe, so it does allow you to tilt the engine and rotate the downpipe on the turbine housing to keep it in the same positions.

I think I've found some clamps that suit, although they all look like they need a taper machined into them, but shouldn't be a problem.

Would have had one a year ago mine cost over £400 to have custom made although is excellent quality by a very reputable fab shop in Derbyshire.
My lambda boss is by the bottom bend.
Here are some bad photos

Very nice Mark, bit expensive for my liking but looks very well made.

Already have the Matty manifold so a downpipe would be nice.

Just waiting now for Matty to issue a price and lead time *smiley*

I managed to get out in the workshop today, and made a jig from my downpipe.

What are people's thoughts on getting a 2 1/4" downpipe between the subframe and pot joint?

Could you not oval that section of pipe.

Would 2 1/4" just sleeve straight onto a 2" exhaust? I'd be interested whether it be stainless or a modified Saab item *wink*

Same as what John said really. Iv already got the Saab down pipe just don't really have the skills or time to start grinding and welding it to fit.

Ovaling the pipe could work quite well, but if its not needed, even better. lol

it would mean that a 2" centre section would fit straight in or gives the option of running 2 1/4" all the way through. *smiley*

John has loaned me a Saab exhaust and when I looked at it, I came to the conclusion that i haven't got the skills to make it work and be a tidy install. Lol
