Tadley, Hampshire.

Recently purchased a "Standard" ERA Mini - British spec. It has not run in a while so having checked that it would run - which it did - and didn't smoke - I decided to do "The right thing" and have the head off, renew the headgasket and change the valve stem oil seals.

Please can you advise me on the following:

Having taken the head off I find that it has Double valve springs on the inlets with the normal valve stem oil seal fitted to the top of the valve guide. Spring dimensions are Large: 44mm long 28.8 dia 5 full coils Small: 42mm long 20.4mm dia 6 full coils.

On the exhaust it has the correct valves marked TAM1330 and SINGLE VALVE SPRINGS 51.25 long 29mm dia 5 full coils. The interesting bit is it is fitted with LUB10009 valve stem seals which are normally used on a Land Rover Discovery 2.0l T16. It is impossible to fit the smaller second internal spring with these seals as the seal is bonded into a steel "hat"onto which the valve spring sits thus preventing the seal from rising.

I have read somewhere on Turbo Minis about a modified valve stem oil seal - but also recall that the company making/distributing them is no longer trading.

So the specific advice I would like is:

A) Refit as it was with double inlet springs and 4 traditional valve stem oil seals and leave the single springs on the exhaust but renew the LUB1009 Should I also replace the valve springs with a known value - if so which ones?

B) Return it to standard by fitting the correct lower locating collar, double valve springs and 4 traditional valve stem oil seal. (I do have these parts available)

C) Any other suggestions - given that it is an ERA and more for show than go! Running on 4 cylinders and not smoking with a bit of Turbo whistle will suit me fine!

It has standard rockers.

I wouldn't run exhaust seals on a turbo. Fit only on inlets.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

I disagree. We fitted decent ones on the metro van and they caused.no ill effect at 25+ psi.

steve ,

are those seals soft ,with no steel in them? I used some steel bodied one on mine and I have no idea what they are really made for originally, just had them in my parts bin . .

Robert, those seals are top quality, never go hard and exception. Wear tolerance, I fit them to all my heads with inner spring retainers to stop the inner spring poping the seal off,

I concur. With Andy Bellamy totally. !!! V
