Swansea boyo!

Pimp my ride hahahahaha! I have a vague idea of how much it's cost so far and I haven't had any engine work done yet, it's going to be £1500+ though I think!

Never seen that thread before apbellamy sorry! But it'd just generally like a thing that I'm not being ripped off haha for a basic engine at like 50 bhp

I think I started with a cheap figure in mind and you end up balls deep in receipts

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

It all depends in how lucky you are and how quickly you want it done. If you're not in a rush, you can wait for bits to come up cheap.

Wintersurfer managed to build his turbo lump for around £1000 all in. The quest for more power soon takes a grip though as now he's pretty much spent that again on gearbox stuff.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

The vans engine was cheap considering the power it made.

Lets just say my 1098 started blowing some smoke so pulled the head for some guides n seats that lead to might as well do rings n hone that lead to finding a shaged dubble roller bearing in the box and it trurned into a full blown hopefully off tap turbo power house and ive never been behind the wheel of a turboed mini

As far as cost goes ha! Take the figure that it could no way ever be and dubble it!

I've owned my mini 15 years and I would say I've spent at least £15k on it during that time excluding running costs (tax, insurance etc). If I had bought a 'normal' car at that time instead for £15k (which I wouldn't have had that money at the time) it would well and truly be in the grave now and I'd have nothing to show for it. Instead I have a fun car that although I'll never recover those cost is still worth something if I was to sell. I'm not sure if that logic stacks up but that's how I make myself feel better*happy*

I've easily spent 5k on mine over this year, makes me feel better that I could have bought a newer car exactly like everyone else but instead I put it into a car a lot of people with modern cars are jealous of. More smiles per miles and all that *tongue*

You could do like me- buy an engine, plan a rebuild, eye up some stuff n wait for cheap bits to turn up, dream of your dream mini you will do.. eventually!.. and then just go buy one already done! For way less than what an engine build would be *Clapping*

My engines have all been built from used bits with new bearings, rings and gaskets and have been OK so far (140bhp on the rollers @12psi) and around 7000 miles.

I would estimate the costs at less than £500

It depends if you mean just the engine........ or the whole project.

For the engine, as I also do 90% myself, the only bits I paid someone else to do was Steve (Benross) for the head work and Scholar Engineering (our local Mini friendly place in Suffolk) to offset bore the block. The pistons were cheap (Hypatech from Aus) and I machined them myself and did everything else myself, mostly with good secondhand components and new bearings/gaskets. If you add all the new parts (just engine) like lightened flywheel, uprated clutch and add the necissary turbo parts (bought secondhand), I'd say around £1,200 - £1,500.

But if you add the cost of gearbox (Quaife ATB alone nearly £600 on a group buy) and the cost of rebuilding the shell from rust and, in my case, all the EFi stuff and wiring, you can probably multiply the engine cost by about 5 times to get the total project cost.

But it's been spread over a few years and, like others, I didn't bother adding it up, just spent it as/when I felt comfortable doing so.

And of course, nothing takes account of the cost of my/your time....

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

I reckon I'm £8-9k into my car. Will be pushing for a £10k agreed valuation when I insure it shortly...

£10k is a realistic figure for your car Andy - I would love to see it.

My van is insured for £7k agreed value.

I suppose if you look at some of the people who spend £10k on an all-singing all-dancing NA 1380 and end up with something with no torque below 3500 and is useless for the road. In terms of hp per £ a turbo engine makes sense.
