I think they are a bit old hat to be honest. Audi TT MK1 inter coolers look a better bet to me.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

hmmm i like the R5 cooler having both ports on one side.
but the reason im using it is because i have a cooler but its massive and going to be a pain to fit, and my mate has a R5 ic i can use for a bit until i find something more suitable.

The thermostat needs removing. As for strapping, on high boost the ends can pop off, apparently. In my experience the cores actually split under high boost. Not a bad intercooler thouugh.

Check out Custards build thread. He's used a R5 intercooler where the radiator would go.

Jesus that looks rough inside.

WTF is going on there ? Has someone been filling it up with silicone or epoxy or something ?

R5 is a doddle to fit, I fitted one on mine 20 years ago.
Side mounted in the drives side inner guard.

The thermostat can be easily bolted into the open position.

End tanks can have a habit of blowing off, but it will depend on boost used. Say 5-10psi they should be fine...20psi+ and they will definitely need strapped.
Even at 15psi strapping makes sense.

Or just rip the plastic end tanks off and make up some aluminium ones instead. But if going to that trouble...probably no sense tying yourself to the R5 core unless it's cheap.

I know that's what I thought :L

Is it meant to have a gap there though?

The picture is very difficult to make out.

But an R5 intercooler is a dual pass.

Air travels up one half, into the open end tank, and back out the other.

The tank with the two pipes is divided.

Havent a clue what that picture is showing other than a huge whack of silicone or something

Yeah this one isn't divided, there is a gap at the bottom of the devision, I'm guessing that gap isn't supposed to be there

Nor should whatever that thing is in the middle !! lol

If it's that rough inside,...it must be pretty terrible looking on the outside too ?

Does that pic not show part of the divider missing?

If so, then it'll be useless.

Not sure I would trust that with what looks like fibreglass filling where thermostate would have been. I have a flowed and strapped (with a giant jubilee clip) R5 that you can have for beer tokens or a pace ally one for £15. Could send pics if your interested
