obvious...

rip out the std shitty speed control, raid the parts bin and give it its own dedicated wire feed PSU and PWM speed controller.

Done this a while back but haven't had the chance to use it properly yet, but the modifications should yield a very respectable welder for what little it owes me (something like £70 in total for a 150 turbo with the mods) Let me know how you get on! I hope you've done the wire feed mod too.

not yet, will report back when i have.

Got the welder as a freebee, so it was worth having a tinker with....

After having a read around, apparently the feed for the speed control is feed from the output of the big transformer... so as the current goes up and down so does the wire speed, and that is one of the causes of the crappy wire feed, that and the later welders all have a piss weak motor and plastic housing that bends and dosent feed properly.... luckily this one is an early one with a much bigger motor and more susbtancial housing.

current mods are,

Big PSU free from the skip at work
PWM speed controller £7 ebay
big relay free from skip at work
steel wire feed £4 ebay
couple of motor suppressors £5

cool,

mines earlier than yours, and the motor is about 3 times the size, the hosign is totaly different and shouldnt flex like yours, it looks similar to the snap on ones.

lol it does look just like a wiper motor!

pulls about 1.5A so cant see how the existing psu was keeping up.... the one in there now is about 3.5A and the speed cointroller will handle 10A, so should all be fairly bomb proof.

Yeah jim, just a switch mode PSU/transformer just to control the wire feed motor, mine is rated up to 24v I think but trimmed down to 20V
