Is there any difference I should be aware of between a standard metro inlet manifold and a turbo one? And will there be any problems with water heating pipes being different sizes?

Also what type of exhaust manifold should I be looking at (remembering this is a 998cc)? I've already been told to avoid LCB's but I'm not sure what to go for instead - apparently the standard exhaust manifold is not very efficient.

And does the advice to stick to 1.75" bore exhaust systems also apply to a turbo engine?

Yes.

The metro turbo inlet manifold is a different shape to the NA metro manifold. This is to avoid the centre two cylinders running lean when on boost. The standard item works well and is worth sourcing.

As for exhaust manifolds, I'd suggest you really need to do some research in this area, as to talk about an LCB when considering a turbo setup really makes you look a tad foolish.

The turbo fits onto the exhaust manifold, and then a downpipe connects to the turbo outlet. An LCB is a manifold for use when a turbo is NOT fitted.
Do some reading on the subject and have a look at some of the pictures on the site showing the layout of the turbo and manifold.

Tom, when you say the standard item, I assume you mean the metro turbo inlet manifold?

In regard to my exhaust manifold question, what I meant was: should I cat and adapt the standard manifold on my engine, get a metro one, a metro turbo specific one or go for something like the maniflow freeflow ( i think thats their 3-in-1 as opposed to the LCB - please correct if wrong )?

Yes, it was the inlet manifold I meant.

As I said above, in discussing exhaust manifolds intended for normally aspirated engines, you are making yourself look foolish.

Maniflow freeflow, or LCB WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO FIT A TURBO.

You will not have much luck trying to cut and adapt the standard manifold as it is cast iron.

The metro turbo exhaust manifold is the one to use, but seeing as you are intent on not using a T3 then you will have to find a way of making your chosen turbo fit the metro manifold.
Or alternatively make one from scratch that will withstand the intense heat generated by the turbo.

What a nice old conversation to exhume !

I am about to buy a Metro turbo manifold and plenum and have some questions :

Can the water pipes be removed and switched over (as I feel the layout in a Mini bay would be more logical the other way round) ?

Is 30 £ a good price for those ?

I don't want to arouse hilarity but I also was thinking of using a LCB as I want my turbo to sit on the clutch (so cutting the LCB under the first Y und using the remaining elbows to go to the side)

Anyway, waiting for your comments folks.

Hi,
If you mean the metal water pipe in the inlet manifold I guess you could cut them off and braze them back on a opposite ends?
You could use an LCB, but I think it would go too far down the back of the block, even cutting it off where you suggest.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Thank you Bat.

What about the price ?
Is it OK ?

As for the water pipes, I thought they were kind of pressed in or threaded.

Anybody worked on that already ?

Tom states the design is good as for even distribution.

Looks rather swan necked IMO.
Would boosting make up for this ?

As for exhaust manifold, I'll finish it "sur le genou" as we say in France

Someone on here (can't remember who) put one on a flow bench and said the turbo manifold wasn't too far of the MG for flow.

Hi,
I think the steel pipe goes right the way through?
£30 don't seem too bad with todays prices!
Cheers,
Gavin :)

jay yes it was fast carl i think

the N/A MG one flowed a few CFM more than the turbo one but as tom states.........

The steel heater pipes appear to be cast in to the manifold.I had reason to cut off the curved one to suit my installation, cocked it up completely and had to tap the manifold, make and insert an adapter and used standard 13mm plumbing to complete the job.Copper polishes up quite nicely !.

Thanks everyone.

As for the pipes, I'll cut off the curved one if required

Got the parts today.

Turns out the guy recently get rid of a T2 + Mirage manifold, bad luck

He ended his project because he was looking for a genuine Metro turbo engine and prices were too high.

when the carb is off is it worth giving the inlet manifold a quick hone out to remove some of the cast marks?cheers
