Hey Guys,

Been quite some time since I've blown the head gasket and never had one go like this before..

Basically it has gone due to the brass plug in the head being sunken in by 8 thou. I think it has always been like this since I have had the head.

Brocky

Question is: Can I replace the bung with out having the scim it down 8 thou ?

Cheers

Thats a bit iffy. The bung doesn't normally overlap the fire ring does it?

None the less you can drill it out, fit a new bung and just take enough off to clean it up.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

Also have a look at the ignition timing too far advanced this gasket failure and the sunken plug is classic of detonation brocky

Thanks Guys,

Does anyone know where I can get a new bung and what the installation procedure is ?

I found this, but I want one with out a hole....

Guess you bang it in and then light scim ? or could I thread in a bung ? then scim ?

It is a turbo head casting so is a little thinner...

Get someone to make you a new plug that goes right through the waterway to the other side. Then machine away the part that sits in the waterway, so it looks a bit like a upside down pouring funnel. It'll never sink again.

Threading it in won't work as the thread will leave a 'ring' when machined flush where it will leak from. Needs to be a good press fit.

Sounds like you are best just taking it to an engineering shop and getting them to do it. Not the kind of thing you buy. You need to make it to suit the hole.

In error, I removed one of the other plugs and enlarged the hole. Afterwards, I MIG welded it back up, skimmed it and it worked fine. Might be an alternative if the plug option isn't possible.

Just take it to an engine shop and let them fix it Dave. It'll be $50 to $75 and not worth the effort of worrying about.
