Glad you are still at it. For the wheels & MOT, a tame tester once told me some golden advice... "You can only inspect the wheels fitted to the vehicle at the time of the test"

So according to the reading I have done, it is not actually an MOT failure for the tyres to be outside of the body, the MOT tester can fail it or refuse to carry out an MOT if they deem the fitment to be dangerous or testing could lead to damage.
It seems the issue is that under the “Construction and usage act”, Plod or VOSA could stop you and fine you if the tyres are not covered by the body – Not exactly that straight forward, but that’s the basic gist of it I think.
Anyhow, not long after I posted my previous, I went to a classic car show and there were several Mini’s there, without extended arches, most of which the tyres extended out past the body by varying amounts.

Hence, I will wait until I have the suspension set up before I worry too much.



Moving on…



It's been a busy few weeks and we have made a lot of progress.

Front suspension and brakes fitted up and subframe completed.










Peddle box and Brake M/C fitted, then brake pipes completed












Fuel pipes fitted up in rear.













Fitted rear light clusters a sorted wiring from back to front of car.



Roof lining and all rear interior panels fitted
Rear seatbelts fitted
Rear windows fitted
















All wiring completed for lights, wipers, ignition switch, fuses, relays, indicators
cat 1 alarm fitted.
so only the actual engine bay wiring (ECU, etc) and the bonnet wiring are left.











Made the cover for the dash and fitted it all up





















carpet underlay – or rather a stiff light weight foam sheet – cut and fitted
Carpets shaped and fitted (temporarily in the front because I do not want the carpets getting covered in my mess while the build continues).









Handbrake fitted
Doors built up with central locking, window motors and glass
Heater stripped down ready for a coat of paint and new heater matrix




Car lifted off its frame and put on floor – finally…






(Amazing how small it now looks compared to when it was 2 foot off the floor)






Engine swapped from the Cabriolet to clubman












Gear selector and Exhaust mounted






Clutch M/C rod extended and clutch set up for maximum peddle travel.
Originally in the Cabriolet we extended the actuating arm on the clutch to get a lighter peddle, hence more peddle movement was needed than was available, so I needed to replicate that for this build also.

Over this weekend just gone I have been working out how to shoehorn everything into the metal front end, because the initial test fit was a complete failure…

Front end fitting:


As mentioned, initial fitting turned out to be a complete failure.
the Fiberglass one piece obviously has a lot of differences compared to a full metal frontend and bonnet.

Slam panel being the first obstacle.

The photo’s are not ideal, but with the fiberglass front end there was no slam panel, hence the intercooler was able to fit in front and above the Throttle body, but with the meatal front end, there is just no chance of getting it to fit.









After a whole lot of head scratching, it became fairly obvious there was just no way I was going to fit this intercooler, so I then had to do a load of research and find a replacement.

I suppose I could have had a custom intercooler made, but I wanted to crack on and also I am too tight to pay the sort of money I think something bespoke would have cost, so I bought a less expensive ebay special, to the size I wanted based on a guide of 3 litres volume per 100HP and cross sectional area of 50cm2 per 100 HP.

so I ended up with a core of 65mm x 173mm x 450mm, bar and plate, with cast aluminium end tanks.
I knew I would need to modify it to fit the pipework, but that seemed my best option.








after trimming up the slam panel support and reinforcing it, and cutting around 7mm off the lip on the front panel (at the bottom of the intercooler in the above photo’s, it fits!

Still a bit close to the TPS, but with the socket head cap screws changed for button heads, its actually not so bad.




I’ve need to clock the Compressor housing slightly to get the pipe work fitting and that will also mean a little bit of work to move the wastegate actuator mounting bracket, but all told, the intercooler will now fit.


Next issue was the inlet pipe to the turbo, this was fouling on the front panel, hence a little modification was needed





The final issue to overcome is where to put the air filter.

Again due to the metal front it was very tight in the position it was in the cabriolet( in front of the alternator and above the starter solenoid), but with the new Intercooler in the new position, it would no longer fit. Also, I was a bit worried that the front panel of the metal front has no holes for air to get through. With the fiberglass frontend, I cut holes to get some air flow, which I do not want to do on the metal front.

After even more head scratching and test fitting I came up with 2 options
1) Try to fit it in the drive side wing and pipe cold air back to it – No room to get a large pipe from the front and into the wing without getting close to the turbo.
2) Modify the air filter housing to allow it to drop down between the subframe and the front panel.

Option 2 seemed the best option, so I have now started modifying the air filter housing by:

changing the outlet position, to that of the black pipe in the below photo
cutting the old outlet off and sealing somewhere near the red line in the photo
Cutting some material out of the back of the housing to clear the oil filter and subframe. (behind/ Below the black pipe in the below photo




Once fitted, the air filter will sit down under the starter solenoid and so half of the air filter will have clean air coming from the 3 pressed holes in the front panel (below the number plate).
It might be a bit awkward changing the oil filter, but I can live with that.

So that is it all up to date.
Once I have the Air filter modified and the actuator mount changed, then I can get on with wiring the engine bay.

I am pushing myself now for a completion date of August bank holiday weekend – I would like to take it to the local classic car show – doable as long as nothing else crops up…

Great progress Graham! Wow, the front is tight, but good job on the work-arounds. I can attest to the variation in the fibreglass fronts too, two different fronts can have a total different shape and fit!

Thanks All.

I have managed to get the airfilter housing modified and got it squeezed in.
It is bloody tight, but hopefully there is enough clearance for any engine movement.






Annoyingly, when I first made the airfilter housing the orange colouring of the high temp epoxy resin changed the CF fabric colour from blue to a sort of green colour.
This time, with the same materials, the fabric stayed blue. When I pull it all for final fitting I will need to cover the whole airfilter housing, just to make it look more like it was made like it is now, not modified with completely different materials.




Now onto the turbo…

while I was in the loft digging around for other parts (which I never found), I moved a large brown box with a brand new turbo in it.
I was going to leave until much later to install this, but before I get to carried away with finalising the IC pipework and going through the work involved in moving the Waste gate actuator bracket on the GT1752, I’m thinking: would it make more sense to work up the pipework and bracketry for the VNT now, rather than do it all again at a later date.

I’m slightly torn at the moment, get the car on the road quicker or spend an extra few days building it out with something else I need to configure and complete.
The more I think about it, the more I am persuading myself that installing the VNT now is the right way to go – maybe… perhaps…

I did not fit the VNT – just a few minutes out in the garage and I realised it was a major job, mainly due to the Turbo I bought.
I did look at different versions of the same model Turbo, and found one I think will fit with less major modifications to the exhaust system, but that’s for another day.



After hours of fiddling and changing stuff, I now have the engine and all the bolt on bits fitting inside the engine bay with as much clearance as I can get.













It took an eternity to make up a new loom for all the injection stuff – mostly because my notes from wiring the Cabriolet were incomplete – read as NO Notes made.

Anyhow, I got there eventually, but there is not as much room in the dash as I had remembered/ hoped.








Fuel tank fitted and fuel hoses completed









fuel line tested and fuel pressure checked.




Then finally got the engine the engine started.
Checked all the sensors etc to make sure it was all good.



Built up seat mounts for the seats. So they are now in place, just waiting for the new covers to arrive.





The runners need a little de-rusting and the seat bases will need a coat of paint also, but not a massive amount of work there.



The car is now almost drivable – at least for a few meters.
I have deliberately not installed the gear stick at the moment, so that I do not get tempted to drive it, otherwise it will be a big rush to almost complete it before it goes on the road.

We still have all the suspension to set up, which I will not do until the car is at full weight.



Doors now finish built – less the door furniture. Just need to add the opener and pull handle on the insides.








They now just need mounting. (And find some suitable mirrors)



Central locking and Alarm fitted tested and signed off by Thatcham approved installer


V5 sent off with new colours and engine change – which I have a feeling will be a fight (no engine number as it was machined off when the engine was recon’d.)
As the engine never came out of one of my cars, I have no history of the number, hence DVLA were a pain when it was installed in the cabriolet – I am expecting the same thing this time also.

But until I get the V5 back with Historic tax, I cannot order number plates ☹





So the major jobs left to complete:

Re-cover seats – Front and rear
Install seats
Mount doors
Fit Dash – waiting on doors to be mounted to complete central locking and electric wind wiring
Respray front scuttle – I am not happy with it. I was a little shy with the lacquer, so it needs a decent coat.
Fit wipers – waiting on scuttle respray
Build up boot lid and fit
Install gear stick
Respray front end
Wire front end
Build front end – lights, bonnet catch, etc
Fit frontend
Build up and Mount bonnet
Make rear bumper – depending on time, I might just paint the chrome bumper (just if I am anywhere near getting it to the local show on August Bank Hopliday) as a temporary thing, then make the carbon fibre version later.

Set up suspension.

Plus 100 other little jobs which have been forgotten and seem to crop up just when you think the list is getting smaller.

Then finally clean and mop.




Unfortunately at this point though, it really looks like my deadline of August Bank holiday weekend will be an epic miss.

The filters in the air lines, are these in to act as dampers?

The MX5 seat covers aren't too bad to swap as long as the retaining wire in the foam of the base and back rest are still intact.
The Gunson hog ring priers worked a treat for the ones I replaced.

Yes, the fuel filters are there to try to damped the pulses on on the MAP Sensors.
There are also some cut off MIG tips in the lines after the fuel filters.

It's all a long time back now, but it was fairly effective as I recall.

Luckily I live in the centre of a town: I cannot drive up the road with no frontend, doors or boot lid without getting noticed, like I could during the Cabriolet build when it was at my parents house in the middle of the wilderness...

So, just a very short update from me (for a change)

First seat re-trimmed and fitted in the car.

Pretty pleased with how it has turned out and especially pleased with the colour choice.

The grey cloth contrasts well with the rest of the vehicle to break it all up nicely...

Well, my target completion weekend has just passed by and I think there is about another 2 weeks worth of work left to do.

Today though was a monumental day for the car.

It drove for the first time in 10 years to the day - I know this because I drove it from my old flat to new house on the Tuersday after bank holiday in 2013 when we moved in, then abandoned it, to be pushed around the graden as we renovated.


I only did a quick drive in out of the garage - maybe 10 metres in total, but still it felt good...


Boot lid is now built up and installed.

Just waiting on number plates to complete it


Both doors are now fitted - although they are extremely tight to close. The rubber has given slightly over the last few days, but it needs to give alot more.
Looking at a few mini's at the show that I went to on Sunday, it appears door rubbers ( or at least the part that clamps around the door frame) are somewhat thicker now than old rubbers.
So I am now on the search for some rubbers which are not so thick - if such a thing even exists.
one Guy I spoke to said he had the same issue and ended up getting some decent secondhand rubbers which were alot more forgiving for the doors.

Also, I ordered the wrong door mirrors, so waiting on replacements.



We are currently building up the bonnet to make sure that all fits properly before the front end gets flatted out and the paint sorted.

The biggest issue at the moment is the DVLA - I have made 3 phone call to them and got 3 different answers to where my amended V5C is, ranging from "We have never received it", to "yes we have it, but because it is so complex, it will take 10 weeks to process".
*frown*

Hence the reason I am waiting on number plates - because I still cannot order them.


so still plodding along, and slowly getting the the finish line.

Yes! Great news on the first drive in a decade.

New rubbers are a bitch, we've had issues with new door and windows being fairly uncompromising for a while, they do bed in.

Yeah, the windows were pretty tight for a while too. Loads of silicon spray later and the motors are not straining too hard to move the glass.

Also, the doors are becoming easier by the day.

I had not thought of that.

But a have a few weeks left still until it will actually be usable, so I'll hold off and see if DVLA surpirse me.

Just a short update:

Things are progressing fairly well.

Finally have the scuttle resprayed and acceptable.
Therefore Wipers , washer jets and windscreen are now all installed.

Also, the trim around the gutter is fitted and actually does not look anything like as bad as I thought it would.






Front end is bolted on, but needs a fair amount of work on the paintwork (read cutting the crap in the paint out and polishing) before I can install the lights and grill. Working on that now...
Same goes for the bonnet.




Finally I got my V5 back from DVLA and got the new number plates.








The list for completion is getting much smaller now, but it's just taking a long time to complete it all.
