Hi, this is my first post here, i think, and im considering making my mini a turbo, as im quite new at this i apologise if i ask questions youve heard a million times before,

but anyway i have a 1275 mini rio with a 9.4:1 compression ratio. My plan is to fit a t2 using the mirage manifold kit, either from a renault 5 or rs fiesta dont know if theres a diffeance?

I know ill need the fuel return and new carb and stuff but will i need a new distributor? also will i be ok with the compression ratio and pistons (standard) i am running, as i am planning to run standard mg metro boost and hoping for around 95bhpish, also will i need a new oil pump or will my standard cope.

Sorry for the long post, hope you can help,

cheers

I hope this does not sound rude, but you will learn far far more than anyone will type in reply to your post by having a good read through old topics on this site. The answers to everything you have asked are all out there, plus you will probably learn about quite a few other things as well just by having a good read.

Good luck and come back to us with any further problems

Cheers

As well as using the search function, also just look back in the topics pages, there is stacks of useful stuff in there! All the best!

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

some mirage fitting bits: http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=5742

using regular n/a pistons the compression ratio will be too high, different pistons or a modified head is needed...
actually did the std turbo run 9.4:1?

use the r5 turbo, i think the fiesta has a 3 stud fitting which is no good for the mirage manifold
best to change the oil pump really with an avonbar one just to be safe

i used an aldon yellow for a while, it would be the wrong advance curve but could the regular distributor be used?

pretty sure the standard turbo used 9.4:1, the same as my engine, but ive heard that the non turbo pistons are weaker, but would this be an issue with me running low (standard factory mg turbo) boost?

cheers

i dont know, you may want an intercooler just to be safe

or you can try it and see what happens (thats what id do)

The standard turbo motors did use a 9.4:1 CR. However, the difference between the standard pistons and the turbo pistons is the positioning of the top piston ring. On the turbo piston it is lower down, and the crown is also thicker. This makes the piston stronger and also stops boost blowing past the top ring. If you strictly run low boost, and with an intercooler, it SHOULD be OK.

Standard engine produces 94bhp with boost pressure modulated between 7psi and 4 psi, to protect the gearbox.

Running a standard engine on about 7psi constant boost should make your 100bhp, but there are no guarantees how long it will last. Most important thing is to keep the engine out of detonation, that means careful rolling road setup is required, from someone whop knows what they are doing with mini turbos.

Your best source of info is this site in all honesty. Everything you need to know right from the basics os covered on here. There are also some very good articles written by 'turbo'dave Coxon, on the Manchester Minis website.

Set it up using timing light and guesswork and drive it there VERY gently, or take it on a trailer.

As your plan at the moment is really to make something very close to a standard turbo motor, you should be able to get it near enough to drive it there just by using a standard turbo carb needle and standard turbo ignition timing etc.

Do some reading chap. All covered on here.

Go buy yourself a Metro haynes manual, plenty of useful info in there on the turbo stuff.

So is your motor a MG Metro, a 1275 cooper, a 1275 metro or a Turbo lump?

The CR of them is as follows:
MG Metro 10.5:1
1275 cooper 10:1
1275 metro 9.75:1
Turbo 9.4:1

Here is a complete guide:
