When I go for a walk in the park, I avoid stepping in dog c%&p. I get the impression you step in all the c%&p you can find, then wash your shoes off when you get home. End result is the same (we both have c%&p-free shoes when stepping out that evening), but you've gone about it in the strangest and most bizarre way possible

Still at it...................

I can assure you 2 hours is possible - but all the bolts were easily undone - and the transfer case comes off easily enough in situ. Oh and i never have all the bolts in the clutch cover - certainly not the difficult ones ! Yes the flywheel just popped off right away. Yes a trolley jack holds the gearbox up - no twisting on the other mount. If you have no hoist - and no prospect (at the time) of getting one , or having anywhere to hang it from (sky hook ?) - then make do and mend. Since then I bought a pull lift thing in Canada - and next time I will use that for the lifting - but if it's just an engine change I will always just lift the engine. Saves messing with ball joints/drive shafts/gearchange etc. When much younger I did once stagger home from work (40 miles away) with a knackered engine - set too at the kerbside and changed the engine single handed - and off to work the following morning with the spare engine installed. It IS intensive work !
Oh - and I always take particular care NOT to step in dog sh!t.

I dont know the history between this site and the person in question but surely this isnt promoting inter club friendliness? I dont always agree with the stuff he says so i just ignore it most of the time

Somewhere around Swindon

nothing to do with inter club friendlyness mate

this guy sprout a load of rubbish, someone new to minis could try and follow this advice leading to in this case possibly an injury, its better to say nothing than blatantly lie

Thats fair enough, as i said i dont agree with half the stuff he says so i just ignore it but someone new to minis wouldn't know right from the wrong.

Dont think a lot of people like him but there are a lot of knowledgeable people on minifinity

You think so? I don't agree to be honest, I think there are a good number of genuinely knowledgeable people, the rest either don't know much but admit to it (fair enough) or know a little, but are pigheaded as fuck and ready to jump on any little error or omission others make when trying to be helpful, and blast them out of the water.

I don't see the fun in trying to score points, on here it is a much more relaxed atmosphere, mainly as most of the regular posters have a certain mutual respect for each other. I don't think that is true on Minifinity. That is my opinion anyway.

jsut thought i'd bump one of these threads. royallingham has given me alot of very usefull and practical advice in the past, which when i have followed has always been perfect and done as intended. so in his defence:

today i decided to set about replacing the crank in the turbo motor. seing as i was splitting block and 'box i decided to use his method, as a curiosity for myself. i expected it to be a total pain. it wasnt.(the back bolts were a doddle, the transfer case just slid out) i started at a little after 8pm, went out set up my tools, hooked up a light and got stuck in. cracked the engien from the 'box at bang on 10pm. few things need to be said though, i had already removed they flywheel and wok before this (hence how i know the crank was scrap) but they were fairly straightforward to remove. only fidly bit was the lower wok bolts. the flywheel fell off, litterally. but everyhting else was as-is. all the turbo plumbing, colling system, electrics etc. its also bloody freezing out, still snow on the ground. so i wasnt working particularly fast. it could definately be done quicker on a nice day, or within 2 hours wiht a "normally stubborn" flywheel. imho.

well, what can i say IMO this is the hard way!!

i have been wrestling the A series for over 30 years & TBH this is the sill way!*laughing*

i have worked with many fitters electricians so called engineers over many years & it does not supprise me how people see a problem and then attack it in an abstract way.*laughing*

but still get the simlar result after a great many hours & blood sweat & tears while i have been sat in the canteen drinking tea for the last 5....lol

i know its the hard way, but (theres always a but) if i didnt have a hoist and/or i was splitting the engien and box anyway i would do it this way again. i was supprised how easily it went. Teh only reason i made this post was i believe royallingham was takign an unduely large amount of abuse for his suggested way of swapping an engine. thats all. I have not shown him this thread, and i wont. i dont want to start a flame war or a big argument, i just thought id share that this IS a perfectly viable way of swapping an engine.

Hi,
I'm not going to enter the debate of which way to do it. Like Evolution said you have to do the job with whatever tools you can lay your hands on.
The thing that would concern me about that method is the putting back in... How you going to see if the half moon seal and sump gaskets, oil feed O ring etc. are all lined up?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

i personally cant think of a harder way of doing it by building it in the car, but then again i am thick !!! my record for running engine out was 30 mins... i MUST STRESS that this was a metro rallyx car front end removed, and all the bolts / mounts were designed for rapid removal, my dad worked from the clutch side and i worked from the alternator side. the nastiest bit was undoing the 8 1/2" nuts on the Maxi outputs ! also all the tools were to hand, and as the engine was normally out after most meetings everything turned nicely.....and even that we were really going for it....and between us a combined "A" series experience of 30 years (not that it probably matters)

roy probably has a lot of good advice/info/experience as he says he has been working woth minis for over 40 year, so credit to him there. but some of his 'advice' is just crazy.

ive heard him suggest on MF for people to 'turn down' their own discs by taking a wheel off, starting the engine, put it in gear and attacking it with an angle grinder...

so i take most of what he says/recommends now with a pinch of salt.
