Im going down the 998 turbo route and have got everything planned for this but i have just been offered a complete rebuilt 1275 turbo engine for very little money, so should i continue with the 998 build and buy the seperate parts off him or get the complete 1275 lump?

That post sums it up for me. The 998 turbo is still an experimental engine. The 1275 has been tried, tested, and proven by many of us.

I must also point out that for more or less the same cost of doing a full proper turbo engine build, the 1275 has the potential for far more power production than the 998.

the cost of buying the bits seperately for the 998 would equal the same as the whole 1275 engine, would the same sort of setup on both engines produce different power outputs? what is a comfortable power output on a 1275?

there would be alot more help available for the 1275 setup which is always a bonus.

Yes of course. The 1275 has a 30% capacity difference over the 998, this will equate to significantly more power!

Wil and Ben's 998 turbo I believe produces in the region 130bhp? This a VERY highly tuned well developed race engine.

A 1275 with moderate boost, a decent cam and head will make 130bhp with little problem. In fact I believe some people have got 110bhp from an otherwise standard metro turbo engine.

Bearing in mind that a few lads on here are making 200+bhp, and there are plenty others in the 160+bhp category, 120-130 bhp on a well rebuilt engine with careful mods should be no problem!
