Hi all,

I have a query regarding the fitment of an intercooler to my 1989 Metro Turbo.

Has anyone on this forum fitted an intercooler to a Metro Turbo? I have browsed through the photo's of members cars and have seen that quite alot of you have intercoolers fitted, but the placement of the radiator and battery are different on my metro, which leaves me scratching my head.

Any info would be much appreciated,

Tim

I am not planning to move anything round, and am looking for a location where the oil cooler and radiator remain in their front mounted position.

I have seen some cigar shaped intercoolers that could possibly be fitted above the front of the cylinder head, although this may well foul the front radiator hose.

Any photos of Metro Turbos with an intercooler installed would be ideal.

Many thanks, Tim

I dought if anyone will have a definitive answer, it is all about experiment...

This is a pic of possibly the best FWD Metro ever built, i would imagine they(BL The factory) used an MG Montego/Maestro intercooler that is similar to the Renualt 5 GT turbo item.

Ah well, it was just that I was hoping someone might have already successfully fitted one, which would save me time working out what pipes I would need.

I'll have a look on ebay to see which intercoolers feature the inlet/outlet connections on the top, and give it a go at mounting it similar to the computervision engines.

Cheers, Tim

R5 gtt won't fit a mk 2 easily, need a narrower rad, battery in boot and put the oil cooler where the battery was.Possibly a smaller alternator too

I found this photo of a tidy intercooler setup installed in a Mk2 Metro Turbo, I think i'll definitely try something similar. Unfortunately the website this car was featured on gives no details about it.

On my weblog some pictures of the ford cosworth 4wd intercooler I fitted. A very tight fit and I had to modify the inlet.

There's just enough space to fit the spark plug caps but I managed to break 2 pugs allready because I didn't want to remove the intercooler ....*oh well*
And I still have to cut some holes to get some flow through it *frown*

I fitted a escort rs turbo intercooler next to the rad on the right (as you look at the front of the car). Positioned longways top to bottom the pipe feeds can be routed quite easily and you get excellent flow over the intercooler without obstructing the rad. You need to cut the bonnet slam panel a little bit but its all quite neat!
And that was with the same style rad as you mention.
Oh just remembered that you do lose the bonnet locking catch, the second backup one you have to pull when you pop the bonnet

Had a look the other day,due to the bonnet being symetrical-you can fit the secondary lock on the lh side with some captive nuts to hold it to the bonnet ,and cut a square hole in the slam panel
