A while back i bought Dan sumpnut's lovely BRG Mini. It came with a tarmac scorching 998cc lump in it. The plan is to put it back to a turbo. All the parts have bee sourced and slowly the New engine and box is going together.

The spec is fairly mild for drivability, with a CR of 8.5:1 with +60' pistons so plenty of off boost low down power and at 3000rpm the turbo will do it's magic and pull hard until 6000rpm plus.

The spec...

1330cc
T3 mated to flowed and matched manifolds
Enlarged exhaust elbow
lightened/balanced con rods
wedged & bladed crank
MG metro cam(one of the best)
36/29 gas flowed head on inlets and exhausts,Morspeed spec chambers.
Duplex timing gear
Centre oil pickup
SC drop gears
Maniflow down pipe
play mini rear stainless box.
Intercooler(rs turbo S2) using my own take offs
Mg metro challenge actuater(8psi)
pre verto flywheel, orange diaphram, race plate.

The rods and crank have been machined by myself under the instruction of the skilled eye and hand of Simon at Morspeed. The crank now weighs in a whole 3KG lighter at the rods have lost 75g per rod.

Pictured below is my crank compared to a standard one.

At the end of the project the car will be for sale with the funds going towards HC Racings expensive season ahead.

I don't understand fully why you're going to this level Jon...

All peeps care about is that it's got a healthy turbo engine in it...

I'd have said (and this is how fickle 99% of peeps are) that it'd sell faster if it had a polished rocker cover and a stock crank; Than a basic painted MG rocker cover and a fully worked crank and internals...

You don't need a crank like that or blingin rods to be in the 13's afterall - then again, a pressed steel rocker box is also enough for that...

Forgot to add it will have a polished rocker cover to...

I do now what you mean Dave, with people spending £500 on an unknow turbo lump on ebay(That is 285 pints in my local) i thought i would make a real nice one to hopefully sell to a "Turbominis" forum user.

Alsi it would be nice to see one of my own creations do well at Avonpark, which i am sure it would.

As the wedging and blading is mainly labour i am enjoying the new skills learnt, all helping me to practice machining/building a sorted bottom end for my metro should it need one. That crank took 5 hours. It still needs balancing.

Nutter Driver...yes, because i can!

Don't blade the crankshafts!!!! It messes up counter balance even more..
A crank really should look like this:

Fastest A Series Mini in the World

leeds/wakefield.

i firmly beleivbe in lightening the internals ,and if you do as jon has and run the miller across tne web and onto the main section that joins 1&2 and 3&4 because you are machining adout thecentre line ,if done properly can help out the balancer,
i only hope you fettle all those sharp edges jon,
thersw no harm using the facilities if thet are there,

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

dave-i had the idea of building a turbo car and selling it on, not to make to much profit just because i wanted to build an engine to see if i could and then see what it would produce

presumably jon has gone into the trouble of the crank for a similar reason??

Carl, it depends on what you're after. Lighter crank spins up faster, and the blading reduces oil friction, but it's a known fact that light crankshafts eat main bearings.

Why does every other crankshaft in the world have decent counterweights?? Because they work.

On a drag race engine I guess it's a good mod, possibly on a hillclimber as well, but not on something that's built to last.

The perfect solution, would be to blade only the big end side of the crank, and not the counterweights, but then, this would take forever if doing it in a lathe.

Look at the Swifty crank.. LOVELY!

My home made crankshaft lookes like this:

Carl, there are no sharp edges..all shoothed out.

I understand the counter balance issue.

It is abit like the lightened flywheel argument!!

please someone mail the Mini Miglia faternaty and tell them where they have been going wrong all these years!

Sounds sweet so far...

Do you think the orange diapham will be up to it and do machine down lugs on the back plate ?

Cheers

I am very sure the orange will be fine, not too heavy underfoot and upto the job a mild engine.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

it should be a stormer engine john

i bet you just loved doing all those internals

my thoughts are the same as daves.....but

having said that i know where you are coming from

make it happen and enjoy doing it

the blading & wedging there are issues with it!
it does destroy the shells quickley as we know

but it would easily see a seasons hard racing out *happy*

good luck

can i have a go when your finished ?*happy*
