I want to use rivnuts to fix my arches on. It means I can use a nice chrome allen bolt to screw the arches on. I've found these on car-builders solutions (the budget one).

What do people think?

leeds/wakefield.

i hate rivnuts, the first time yuou overtighten the bolt the nut will spin making bolt removal very difficult espacially if its in a confined space ..i know yuor unlikley to over tighten arch bolts but its all relevent, a better option if a little bigger is the ones that have two rivet holes either side, that way you have to sheer the rivets which are more resillient..
or do what i do and fix small alloy blocks with coultersunk rivets and the drill and tap.

I'm also considering buying one of these, I can't decide whether the budget kit is OK or whether to save up a bit more and buy the professional tool. TBH I think I am leaning towards buying the better one though.

The only other comment I would have is to use Stainless bolts for your arches rather than chrome, any chrome bolts I have ever had experience of have been gash quality and gone rusty before long.

Good advice on the stainless.

I can see that they would be a pain if they spun, but I'll probably give the cheap one a punt and report on the results.

I've an eclipse Rivnut set - and it's a great piece of kit. I bought it initially for one job - holding the grille on! My self-tapper holes were gettign bigger and bigger, so I used M4 nutserts and stainless pan-heads.
My advice - only ever use stainless screws, and always apply a smear of grease. When drilling the holes, select a drill that means the nutsert is a tight fit in the hole. Don't use a silly high drill speed that makes a triangular hole. Finally - if you can, use a spring (locking) washer under the fastener so you don't need to wrench it up stupidly tight to prevent it unscrewing.

Hi,
If you want to test Rivnuts for your job you can do it with a nut , bolt and a couple of thick washers. I actually fit them this way as well! *surprised*
For example for a 6mm Rivnut use an 8mm nut 6mm bolt, and a couple of thick 6mm flat washers. Put your two flat washers on your bolt, then your 8mm nut, then screw the Rivnut on the end. Poke it in the hole *wink* Hold the 8mm nut still with your spanner, tighten the bolt head, with your ratchet, to compress the Rivnut. Hold spanner still unscrew bolt... Hey presto, Rivnuts for cheap skates!
Warning you need to be a skilled tight git to sucessfully carry out this job. If you are not sure consult a professional tight git for advice.
Cheers,
Gavin. :)

We have one of those kits at work, They are good but only really good in thin metal also those tools are hard to pull up really tight! We also have a bigger more proffesional kit this is bigger and pulls up loads better!

I would reccommend it tho definatly worth getting for the money. But as dave says drill a hole that is a tight fit this helps alot.

Cheers matt

I have had soo many rivnuts spin at work its unreal!! We use a floating nut now which fixes in with two rivets and allows for slight misalignment and it doesn't spin if you overtighten it! Can't remember the proper name for them though
