hi i have have a 1380 i would like to know how difficult it is and how much it would cost roughly to convert it to a turbo
i know that you have to have a bulkhead box
and change the compression ratio to.
the engine already has got dished pistons and a stage 2 head
and i will be upgrading the gears to s/c
any help please *smiley**wink*

Not with a mirage manifold

Need 15 or 18cc dish and a good quality piston

Hi,
Welcome to the forum!
How expensive? Cheap to telephone numbers. It depends on if what you've got is up to the job, how much you can do yourself, cheap second hand (as it isn't always), new may cost less in the long run.
Compression ratio? Depends on how much boost you want to run. Low comp with high boost or high comp with low boost. Both can give you the same power output, but delivered in a completly different way. Which leads to what do you want from the car / what are you using it for?
As you can see there are many different solutions to just one seemingly simple question.
This is where the you need to use the NEW & IMPROVED search button, read through posts and FAQ's. Decide what your aim is, then ask questions, then get the cheque book out and give it the beating of it's life!
I think I've covered everything, I'm off to bed!
Cheers,
Gavin. :)

turbo ex valves fitting in the head
avonbar do a good turbo cam and 18cc pistons for the 1380
you may find the head you got being n/a the head ports are to big for turbo use ?
you need a turbo distributor

Jimmy, There is no specific need to get turbo exhaust valves.

I personally would not use them because they are going to be at least 15 years old for a start.
The thick sodium filled stem also puts me off as this can create a reduction in flow in comparison to the same size but thinner stem valves.

The head will be spot on port wise - porting a head is in no way detremenal to a turbocharged a-series.
The only advantages smaller ports have is that gas velocitys are higher - this will help to spool up the turbocharger. However it will harm the top end power through its lower gas flow ability.
Depending on your current compression ratio and your planned boost figure you may want to get the head chambers opened up as compression may be a tad high at the moment.

A turbo distributer will have the wrong curve for a 1380turbo - you may want to enquire with the guys on here that already have running 1380turbo units - find out what curves they use and get your own distributer made up.
Alturnativly mapable ignition does seem to be the way forward - especially with afordable types such as the mega jolt system. Have a look into it in the Mega squirt/mega jolt parts of the forum.

i turbo'd mine quiet easily.
last used a high 9.8 cr running max 10 psi with 24 deg fixed advance and was a lovly car to drive.
this year ive reduced it to 9.4 cr so may run a bit more boost.
oh yes plus thats all with a rs intercooler.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

I run 11cc dished omega pistons and chambered head to give 8.3-1 cr, fixed 26 degrees timing using a standard electronic dizzy with weights welded (soon changing to megajolt). R5 turbo intercooler, not too difficult really. You should find all the info you need on this site.

I think you'll find there are as many people running without the sodium valves as there are with them. I personally don't use the sodium valves and i've certainly run more than 8psi.
The advance curve will be different for every application, it depends on cam choice, compression, boost etc. No two engines are the same, it needs to ne tailored to each application.

Phil.

Hi,
Yes you can, if your pistons have enough dish in them to give you the correct compression ratio, or you could open out the chambers in the head.
Cheers,
Gavin. :)

basiclay thats what i did when my chambered head was cream crackered.

but be warned i did run 10 psi on it with 140 bhp at the flywheel but this was with fixed advance and ran on det cans on the rollers.

i use fixed adv as its totaly safe if you keep an eye on it but you wont get the most out of the engine unlike other type of ign but its a cheep and easy way to do it.
