WAY OT- Gas Plumbing Question

Any plumbers here? I am in the middle of building a workshop which is not attached to my house. I want to run gas into the workshop so I can install a boiler. What is the correct way to run Gas underground, through a mixture of soil and concrete?

I would imagine in a trench full of pea gravel or the like, and they use thick walled yellow plastic pipe. HTH. Just remember where you put it when digging in the garden! You can't beat nice warm rads in the garage! Mmmm toastie!

I was thinking about getting an oil fired boiler, that way you can just have a small tank outside and top it up with red diesel etc to burn as heating fuel?

That'll work, if you can find a cheap oil burner. I'm using an Eberspacher water heater off a truck. It's fantastic, even got a timer on it, so its nice and warm when you get there!

what size can you get the yellow pipe in? I've only seen it in a silly large size, I want around 22mm Id as I don't want to much pressure drop over the long distance.

an oil boilers the way! i have wayed it ALL up with the price of gas going up.

trianco oil boiler is the dogs nuts

you can burn red heating oil or nip down to your local ASDA and stock up on their brand of vegie oil for 47p per litre
( rape seed oil) look at the small print on the lable.

this burns with only "0.1 Emissions"

if you run it neat OR it will mix with diesel ANY ratio
NO PROBLEMS!

you can run "Anything" on this mixture ....so to speak! ...Cough!

still 47p a littre, the same friend of mine use to use kerosine and oil mix, worked a treat on his cough!

@ Jimster, well you're only laying the pipework aren't you , then the gas fitter couples it up and tests it! LOL. Yes about 22mm is what you want, can you get it from plumb/ pipeline centre?

As far as I see it, as long as a leak down is done after install it should be ok.

Yes, leak down, is that the technical term for soapy water round the joints? Or if your an approved gas engineer you can use a fag lighter

I'm posh!! I have gas leak detection spray. works pretty well too. not that I've used it, my 'friend' told me about it

Jim, I would lay a bed of red sand down after the pipe, that way anyone in the future will notice it when digging.

Same as when you lay underground cables.

on the oil burner thing. red diesel was 36p a litre iirc when i had to buy it last time. that was at a small garage out on the fun roads, but theres a texaco that does it and its int he high 40s near me. sounds cheeper than veg oil if anyone else decided to go that route :)

when you run the pipe you can buy tape with GAS on it
it runs in the ground with the pipe

when you run the pipe seal the ends because you will get water in the pipe and it will fu*k the heater up and the gas will not burn right because the water lays in the low part of the pipe run :cool:
