Somewhere around Swindon

been to local factors today whith wildly varying quotes for clutches between £59 and £130 just for the kit

all the factors asked if it was a pull clutch, wtf is a pull clutch? when i said whats the difference the guy behind the counter drew a deep breath and said there a pig to do ???

mr clutch wants £240 for a fully fitted clutch and i really dont want to spent that on a car that im not really sure will last much longer although i am hoping to see the rest of the year out with it

My 306 is a pull clutch, granted they are SLIGHTLY more tricky to do but by no means that difficult.

Most conventional clutches PUSH the release bearing against the clutch spring "fingers" which then releases the clamping force onto the clutch plate and hence flywheel.

However, certain Peugeot models use a "PULL" clutch. This works by the mechanism with two "levers" that slot in BEHIND the release bearing. Then, when you press the clutch, the release bearing is PULLED away from the flywheel and that is how the clutch is released.

The only major difference between the two is when you come to put the gearbox back on the engine. On the "PUSH" conventional type you just slide the box onto the engine, making sure the release bearing slides over the input shaft.

On the "PULL" type, you have to position the release levers, such as when you slide the box on, they slide in and behind the release bearing (which is part of the pressure plate).

It is really not that much more complicated than the normal type, you just have to take care doing it. When I did mine I got the release levers on the wrong side of the bearing first go so had to do it again.

If you take a picture of the top of the gearbox, in particular the clutch cable end area I should be able to tell you which type it is.

Hi,
The pull clutches are definately a lot more expensive! Has it got a manual or auto adjuster on the cable *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Should be an auto adjuster and a pull clutch on a 96 405 TD, assuming it has the XUD9TE engine.......
