im running megajolt with one of toms pulleys sensor set at 9.00 oclock if missing tooths at 12 ocock. ive done over 500 miles upto now this week. ive set my ignition timing to 23 degrees fixed throughout the whole range thinking this will be safe for running in.

ive just checked the timing with a strobe gun and its reading 45 degrees and the tacho on the gun is double what my tacho in the car says.

now am i right in thinking this EDIS system is a wasted spark system? and if so is that why my readings on the gun doubled? or have i done something wrong.*oh well*

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

the tacho on the gun is indeed because of the wasted spark system..... cant help with the 45degs tho.....

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

well if the tachos double then does that mean the advance must be double? ive just rechecked it and its more 46 degrees than 45.

i think im right what im thinking just want peoples opinions if they think im right thats all.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Disconnect your mega jolt, and start the car with just the edis.

You should have your timing set to 10 degrees BTDC, if not, then your pickup must be in the wrong place.

Perhaps your strobe has some functions that cant cope with a wasted spark system, borrow a cheapo one that can't lie!

You gun is counted two sparks when it thinks there will be 1

Wasted spark fires twice per 4 strokes... once just before the power stroke and then again during the exhaust stroke.

Or to put it another way

46 / 2 = 23

*happy*

bollocks does that count for all timing guns? would sort of expalin some strange figures ive been getting! when checking the jolt against the pully. ive been thinking its 9 deg too advanced so ive retarded the jolt as much to be safe!
steve

doh! why did i start messing with it!

I don't see how it will affect the basic strobe function of the gun. If you connect it to plug one then it will fire at TDC for cylinder 1 and 4. The missing tooth will be in the same place for both cylinders. If you have a fancy gun ignore that and just read the timing marks on the fly wheel or timing wheel with the strobe. It should be fine.

I have successfully used a strobe gun on the wates spark, proved 10 degrees and then that the megasquirt is working.

just been out and dissconected mjlj and with my gun it says 20 degrees. if it were 10 degrees out then when i set it to 23 degrees it would be 33 degrees not 46 degrees so im gonna go with the wasted spark thingy threory.

sorry if what ive just wrote makes no sense

im using a snap on timing light but is an older model.

Bingo!

Its because the plugs are fired in pairs... and all the Timing Gun does detect the magnetic field the electricity passing down the HT lead creates.

As a HT pulse happens twice as often in Wasted Spark than a single coil system this upsets the counting and hence flashing the timing light does.

However, some timing lights do not seem to mind.

Either way you should still be able to use the marks on the pulley and timing chain cover.

Hi,
Yes your timing light will definately read double for advance and RPM. 20 degrees on your map will read 40 on your engine.
I use a map with 20 degrees in every box, then align the TDC marks to 40 degrees on the timing light. Switch back to original map, job done.
Cheers,
Gavin :)
