im using carl's wide 7x10's, think they work out roughly 7.5. Miglias use 8's i think.

Miglieas USED 8" wheels. 7" are now the widest allowed. For road tyres ie. 165/70-10, 6" is the widest you should use.

Say you have got your 165/70-10 tyres;does it make any difference to performance (grip handling) if you fit them to a 5,6 or 7 inch wheel?Or is it mainly for looks?

Yes. YOu might notice a difference between 4,5 and 6, but 7 is too wide. The tyres aren't designed for this.

Near Daventry, midlands

i've had a tire, rear, on my car come off mid-corner. In this case it was a 7"wide 13", but when they come off in the fasion peter's suggested it happens very very quickly and if your going any speed or if there is someone coming the other way its going to get messy.

Fortunatly for me it happened when i flicked the car into a slow speed corner so was just able to keep it out of the hedge.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

Ive had simultaneous double rear blow outs on my old spi at 50mph, has some new wheels/tyres fitted, and the wankers that fitted them never checked that they cleared my coil over shocks. my fault for not double checking i guess. swerved into oncoming traffic, but they all managed to dodge me thank god. the big man must have been looking over me that day.

dont suzuki vitara "fat boys" use 10x7" wheels?

can imagine the tyres available for them are useless for a mini, but you never know...some aftermarket 'street' tyres might be available..?

If you go for wheels that are too narrow then there will be too much tyre roll, which is not good for cornering, but if you go for wheels that are too wide it will offset the centre of the wheel outside the axis between the ball joints, making the car more prone to tram lining and bump steer.

From talking to various people it seems that best option for 165 tyres is 6" wheel, but I can't find any real infromation, it's purely peoples opinions.

Hi,
If I remember correctly, on the Yoko site it tells you recommended rim widths for the tyre size. Fairly sure 6" was the max for a 165/70/10 As stated above to wide ... very dangerous.
Imagine trying to get the insurance to pay out when they find out you've ignored the tyre manufacturers instructions! *surprised*
Cheers,
Gavin :)
