Can you go too big on the size of the intercooler. I have one from a subaru WRC that i am thinking of using. What are the advantages and disadvantages. Is lag the only downside to oversizing the intercooler. (Maybe Antilag could help cure this).

Any ideas.

i dont think you need to fit the biggest intercooler you can get. lots of people on here have smller ones fitted in a good place and have top notch results.
why dont you sell the suburu one on ebay and buy one thats better for a mini*smiley*

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

john flan seen a
"whole 30HP increase" ....just ... by swapping from a 2WD cossie Intercooler & shoehorning a 4WD one in

mind you johns motor was approaching the 200+ mark

if you can get the scoobi one in with out too much bother, i would go for that!

carl is right, to a point.

with a larger cooler the turbo would take a moment longer to spool up

thats the down side.

its a compromise you need maybe??? *wink*

Does the 4x4 cooler use 60mm dia ports ? Also do you have to change you set up in terms of timing and mixture when you fit a cooler, only asking as I'm about to fit one ?

BTW - I took my buddy VTEC Pete out for a spin this weekend, and even though I am running her in, he gave it a name, the "Brocket"...cause I'm a brocket maaannn, nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah....

not sure about this ?

having a cooler charge means you can make more power for the same boost!

or run slightley more boost .. say 2psi more to be safe on the same C/R ratio:

the timing stays the same on the clockwork dizzy........ but could be advanced a little to gain more power!

an intercooler as one TOP turbo guru stated is not the icing on the cake its MORE CAKE!

It was a Series 1RS turbo cooler for a 4x4 sapphire item.

The fueling didnt change, it just cooled the charge very well and allowed a better burn and more advance.

Yes 60mm.

Thanks guys,

Will try out my 2wd cossie cooler to start with as this will be mounted right up behined my clubman grill. *happy*

Also been looking at using thermo electric modules to cool the intercooler as aposed to water spray.

Did you know if you reverse the polarity you can use a temp gradient across a unit to produce current all be it slightly less effieciently?

So if you could use the heat of the engine from the rad in steady state conditions ie it clicks in at motorway speeds which would give a good air flow over a nice heat sink you could reduce the load on the engine from a close loop control system to reduce the load from the alternator?ie an auxiluary generator.

So you could reduce fuel consumption and or increase avalible bannanas. If you could target a global haulage market ie trucks moving at 60 mph 24 7 then there is a massive potential for fuel saving in terms of fuel comsuption ???or to save bhp at certain times during a race all be it a slight edge.

Please forgive my spelling as I have had a few

Bismuth and teluride seems the be the best in reverse

(ie seedbeck effect <reverse peltier>*wink*

would a r5 gt turbo intercooler be any good for a mini?
i dont no what size they are but as the turbo is small on them i would of thought the intercooler would of been small as well? or does it not work like that?
cheers

Would be a good choice if you can get it in a good air flow also you can get an all alloy item for higher boost applications or alternatively strap the standard item to stop the end caps blowing off !!!*happy*

I would say you can go to big. As if your not careful if you have a cooler day, you might find you keep freezing up your carb and the car keep cutting out, just some thing to think about.

josh_tacon i think the r5 intercoolers are idea for minis, If there are flowed and stapped.

T3 tone has one and he's around the 180 bhp mark!! abd never had any probs.

I have had a look at the potenitial of using Peltier elements for cooling intake air.

From a previous post, the largest version are 320W electrical rating. They can cool the air by a maximum of 320W assuming 100% efficiency. More likley they can only cool at 200W.

Anyway, assuming that you are running at 100hp, at approx 5kg/min air flow and your intercooler is dropping the charge temp by 100 deg C, the intercooler is taking 3000W of energy out of your inlet air.

Is it worth using the Peltier element when you can achive the same effect by using a slightly bigger intercooler? I don't think so!

yep there's no way a peltier will cool the inlet charge to any degree,

although it might be possible to use them to cool fuel.

peltiers are around 1/3 efficient, so for a 300W peltier you have to put in 900W of electric to get the 300W cooling. thats about 30Amps at 12v.

And thats got to come off the crank.

So you'll lose 1.5 hp for about a 2hp gain!

Fair enough just thought you could use them to cool the intercooler down before the start of a hill climb or sprint while you are waiting to start. Like the oposite of a tyre warmer before a race.

What do you think of the power generation idea, which would use waste heat energy from the engine to make current ?

You could make a generator out of it, but not enough to lose you battery or make much difference at the crank by lowering the load on the alternator.
