when the engine is cold the engine fires up straight away, when its warm it takes quite a while to start.

Why is this??

If it breaks... build a much faster one

Are you using the anti run-on valve or have you blocked it off?

Because the heat from the turbo evaporates the fuel in the float chamber.

mines exactly the same, its a right pain in the arse. i'm considering plumbing the anti-run on valve back on and seeing if venting the float chamber after a run helps on hot starts.

Did the anti run on valve help?

NOTE: the anti run-on valve and the fuel vent valve are two completely different things........

Hot starts shouldn't be a real problem, do what the Metro Turbo handbook suggests. Hold the accelerator to the floor when starting the engine. Obviously, quickly release it once the engine fires.

Sorry to be really thick but what do each of these do/ how do they operate??

Have been starting it as Turbo phil says, but did not know whether there was a way to get around the problem.

Anti run on valve was fitted inline with the brake servo vacuum hose, its purpose to open when the ignition was switched off in order to make the mixture into the engine very weak to ensure it stopped. This was more of a problem to the normally aspirated high compression MG Metro engines, which tended to suffer from "running on". In actual fact this "anti run on" valve was not fitted to Metro Turbos.

The fuel vent valve operates by opening with the ignition switched off. This vents the fuel float chamber to atmosphere, no-one is 100% sure of the thinking behind this but it is a reasonable guess that it was done in order to vent any petrol vapours caused by heat soak from the turbo on hot shut-down, to help with hot-starting.

Thanks Tom. We are getting Run on and hot starting problems a the mo, as well as the engine seriously struggling, almost seeming to become lean once the Turbo starts to come on boost, although the water temp nor oil temp seems to rise. Most of this I hope will be cured once the car has been on the rolling road again. It was only half way through tuning when the oil pressure disappeared. We Have been running it in for a while before sending it to th RR again.
