if removing the ecu from a metro turbo engine, what boost can be run safely? im looking at avonbar actuators, and thinking that 8psi one would be suitable? many thanks

I take it this engine will be intercooled?

I will be looking to run 8-9psi on 9.4:1 comp ratio with intercooler

Wrong, its 7psi up to about 3500rpm, 4psi from 3500 to 5k ish, then 7psi again after that. Done to cut out the big torque peak in the mid range so that the gearboxes did self destruct in warranty period.

Not quite. It is 4psi up until about 4500rpm, then it increases in line with the revs until it maxes out at 7psi at about 6300rpm. Without the boost modulator system it is 4psi maximum.

The Austin-Rover repair manual, Vizard's guide, and the boost gauge in my standard Metro Turbo all match what I stated.

mine is as metro turbo states, 4psi upto about 4000rpm then it gradually increases to about 7psi near the red line

Replace with a bleed valve.

Quickest and easiest way.

Hi,
You could fit a bleed valve, a strong actuator or put more pre load on the exsisting acuator. Which ever you do measure the boost pressure with a guage and get the fuelling checked on a RR :)

just fit it fully open, so its letting all the pessure through to the actuator (i.e. not bleeding off any pressure), then gradually increase the amount bled off bit by bit till you have the desired boost level.

so if i fit a '7psi' actuator and a bleed valve it will be limited to 7psi when on boost?

Fit a 7psi actuator OR a bleed valve.

A bleed valve bleeds off some of the pressure so that a 4psi actuator only "actuates" when 7 psi is available, 4psi goes to the actuator and 3psi is bled off to the atmosphere.

If you have a 7psi actuator you dont need a bleed valve..
