Ok Heres my little guide on fitting a new style quaife into your mini, its very simple:

1. Take one mini:

2. And one box of tricks, mine came from BJ Autobits. Try not to snigger like i did when the phone is answered with "Hello BJ's"

Remove all packaging and stickers to leave a diff in a bag

3. Clap hands and watch as the engine removes itself:

4. If your a bodger like me, lean the engine forward on some bricks under the starter so you dont need to drain the oil:

5. Remove diff covers to remove the old diff, in this case a minispares 4pin:

6. Remove the bearing and then crownwheel if you are going to use it on the quaife. Rejoice in the fact that you can now use a sensible ratio and admire the differences between the two. The quaife comes ready to roll:

7. Place the crownwheel on the quaife and torque up the std bolts (ill add the setting here soon), then fit the new diff bearings:

8. Check for clearance in the covers and fit the diff onto the car, and push it towards the radiator end. Use gaskets if they were there originally, fit the side end cover and preload the diff as per the haynes but shimming the opposite side. Torque up all the covers.

9. With the help of someone strong- Popeye, Desperate Dan, The Incredible Hulk, etc, put the engine back into the car.

10. To finish off, fit the sticker somewhere useful and go enjoy:

See isnt that easy

So then how does it drive?????

Well ive never driven any other sort of lsd so I cant tell you how it compares, but
-Under normal driving conditions it feels the same as the std diff

-When giving it beans in a straight line on a smooth flat road its AMAZING, the car pulls straight and lurches forward much quicker than the open diff

- On bumpy roads its not too bad, a little bit lively but no worse than the open diff (now ive tightened up the ball joints :$ )

-Theres a long straight near my house that has drainage channels underneath it. Its easy to jump the car on these and with the open diff id find myself zig zag-ing up the road like AlexB after one too many babychams at avon. However I managed to go up here in a controlled fashion on 20psi of boost. (I find this interesting as Calver states that it cuts the drive to the wheel on the ground if the car jumps and was expecting to fly off the side of the road)

Now to find out how it improves my 60fts...

Can you point me to this article. As this appears to be bollocks. Early ATBs had no preload so if one wheel lost all traction then the wheel in the air got all the drive (just like an open diff).

Modren ATBs have preload so the wheel left on the ground will alwas have some drive.

Good stuff, one thing though, and not sure if this applies to the quaife, but dont you shim the 'wrong' side of the diff with LSDs?

I thought there was something about that, this may also go some way to explaining why my potjoints are 4mm to the one side...

Heres Calvers article http://www.minispares.com/Article.aspx?aid=194

Keep clapping tone, itll go eventually

The old diff has already been requested

Anyway, i rang quaife today, and they said it didnt matter where you shimmed the diff, just as long as all the free play is taken out so it cant move around

I noticed that all of Nics times were consistantly better, by about 0.3 - 0.4 seconds, only Nic can determine if its the diff or not though!

It contributed nothing at all, i wouldnt recommend one.....ahem

yeah my 60fts drop to consistant 2.2's, and thats with wheelspin in 1st and 2nd, where as at avon they were 2.4's+

well worth every penny, your looking at at around £500 gold coins though...

Don't like calvers article. He bangs on about the trannex being the best diff in the world and then slates the salisbury due to its archaic design STOLEN STRAIGHT OFF SALISBURY. Not impressed, however I do want an LSD and now my 4 pin is scrap, I'm facing the same choice. I would probably go for a trannex though.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

It's got a load of slop in it, I haven't taken it to bits yet. Just observing it by holding the crownwheel in the case and tweaking one pot joint. My diff bearings are the most worn I have ever seen any. I'll pull it out at some point but am looking at getting the other engine back in first.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

Another minor f-up by me.

It turns out that shimming it the normal way isnt the way to do it. Shim it the opposite way to a std diff (ive editted the first post now)

Doing it the regular way had the crownwheel rubbing on the mainshaft bearing!!! When i got it out i managed to snap the casing using my weedy hands

Could have been expensive

would a 2.76:1 crownwheel fit this? I heard they changed the design to accept a higher ratio than before

Should do,

the new ones take a std crown wheel, nd the 2.76 being std should fit.

might be a bit over kill though, depending on the wheels

@ 6k with 10's i make that

2nd 71
3rd 98
