i just popped this up on ph ,but thought it may be interesting here ...

heres a graph i have ,this was worked out using the drag anylyser pro software

no idea if the designers of the software have taken into account drivetrain losses and rd drag accurately ,but i optimised for pk power at pk speed ...eg i changed the pk power at 6800 rpm then changed the gearing to get to those revs at top speed .i must say it doesnt seem to flatten out as i would have expected , but remember ,the mini has a very very small frontal area.

i also ran the software on a 32 bhp mini mk1 ,and it came up with 74 mph ,which seems about right .

the drag and frontal area figures came from the aero mini article .

some of the gearing i used to do the highest numbers ,eg 2.75 diff and 23 inch wheels , may not be possible ! but remember, if you have 300 bhp ,but the gearing only lets you go to 130 mph at 7000 rev limit ,you wont go any faster than 130 mph with that gearing .

Wil has a list of figures that seem reasonably accurate, I'll see if i can find them, they're spot on to what my old engine was producing.

You make a good point about the frontal area though. everyone says a mini is not aerodynamic, which is maybe true, but it's very small.

Top speed is something Carl and I have been talking about, the DON has had trap speeds consistantly at 125mph, we are now pretty sure it is on the limiter going over the line, need to do a data logged run really to see for sure, if it is the case then it needs a slightly taller diff or taller tyres to extend the top speed by another 5mph or so. 9200rpm limiter and a 3,9 diff.

Robert, you dont have the drag coefficient and frontal area for the A35 to do the same do you ?

Thought not !

I'm pretty sure the rev counter stops moving before the line in the don tom from watching some of the videos.

I've GPS logged speeds of 126mph in my mini, this was on boost higher than ever ran on a rolling road, the engine felt like it was still pulling, but small balls and fast aproaching avon rise got the better of the right foot, what power does your program says is needed for 126mph?

What speed did benross get in his monster, wasn't it over 130mph, that must be pushing out serious power.

I've had a little over 6300rpm in the van in 4th (shift light activation point)

This calculates as:- 120.35mph

I have only calculated this using tyre size, fd ratio etc.

Was still pulling but I ran out of road.

Metro however is a different beast aerodynamic wise, more of an upside down skip than a brick.

I agree with the bottom end of your curve robert. The 998Ti is geared for 110mph on the rev limiter in top gear and can just get there with 100hp at the wheels.

I would have expected the curve to be a bit more exponential past 140mph though, but then who's tried it?

The graph and figures look good. We have talked about this a lot before. Basically the air resistance is so significant that the rolling resistance can be ignored or at the most put in as a constant early on that becomes insignificat at higher speeds.

I put it all in a calculation ages ago:

Ive managed to hit 7600rpm 3.1 diff, but ran out of private road, not sure what speed that equates to.

I remember Matt sorted out a day at Bruntingthorpe proving ground a few years back. It would be great to organsie another to see what we all get!

Would that not be something like 160? Or have my rules of thumb not worked?

I,m too chicken to max the A35, although it has seen topside of 100mph several times.

The only other indication of potential I have had is that It pulled 114mph on the Iron Acton RR day, still in fourth gear at about 6500rpm and I know it pulls past that on the road.

From my computations, it's around 140 depending on the height of the tires.

I know 6700/6800 is around 110/113 as that was what I was running at Avon? So im guessing around 125mph?

When driving to mitp 08 i diverted via my friends air field and someone in an imprezza decided to follow me.
Being stubborn I wasnt going to let them past. The sat nav got to 127 before I got paranoid that the rear window was going to fall out (both windows were open).
There was definitely more in it though

I drew up a graph a while ago, if i remember with a 3.2 diff on 10's at 7500 which is my red line was about 135mph ish. So with a 3.1 and more revs id hazard a guess at 140mph?
