Joe is using a core from a BMW from memory. I'm pretty sure it's similar in size but not sure how the end tanks were before he chopped them off. In the 13's at last!.. Just |

I got Pace to quote me for a copy, but it was nearly £400 which is beyond my budget. So I'm on the lookout for an OEM cooler of similar dimentions. I want to retain the large IC look of the hillclimber, but can easily change it to suit as its GRP . I've searched ebay for a while and asked some sellers to give me dimentions, but not found anything yet. So any thoughts on what might be suitable. Plastic ended is fine. . Cheers ![]() I assume your quote was for a full intercooler unit, not just a core ? As they didnt even quite me that much for a core more than double that size. 9.85 @ 145mph

Makes more sense. At the end of the day, it is the fabrication work that takes the time and skill, hence the cost.

Exactly, even something pretty simple can take 1/2 a day to make and time = money.

The problem is that the core I have at the moment is of chinese origin and is not an efficient design with a high pressure drop across it.

Wil, just out of interest, did you ever measure the pressure drop over the i/c?

Again, you are generalising about design.

There are different types of intercooler core, bar n plate or tube & fin. Top 2 pictures are bar n plate, bottom picture is tube and fin. There are 2 ways these are constructed, glued (like the top picture) or vacuum brazed (bottom 2 pictures). Glue will acted as a thermo conductor which will take longer to release the heat, where as a vacuum brazed core will release the heater quicker due to the way the brazed holds the core together i.e. 100% connection between the tubes & fins, plus its much stronger, but sadly slightly more expensive!

Yes I agree, but all the higher quality ICs use the less restrictive designs. which makes me think that they have a better pressure-drop:thermal-efficiency ratio than the cheaper Chinese cores.
On 18th Jan, 2011 stevieturbo said:
Again, you are generalising about design. Just because it looks different, doesnt mean one is better or worse. You need to take the entire package. Dense turbulators/fins will restrict, but they will also assist cooling. Sparse fins, will obviously flow better, but might cool fuck all. So you need to find a balance of a core large enough not to restrict, and a set of tubes/fins dense enough that it cools. Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph
