Wow - I've just run at a 1030cc engine with the T3 40-trim compressor on my spreadsheet...

I never thought I'd say it - but the bone-stock T3 is fan-bloomin-tastic as far as the compressor map goes for a 7krpm, high boost 998 machine... All the way from sensible low boost aswell.

All aside from the high inertia of course! No wonder it was a flyer!!!

I'll email it over to you for a lookse Wil / Ben
Personally - If you know it worked, and want an immediate solution - I'd throw a bone-stock T3 back on there.

Bugger.

Well what you guys say all sounds abot right, the RR guy even suggested that the turbo was bigger and was suprised when I said it wasn't; turns out he was right.

Unfortunately, the T2 will have to go back on as is for now, as I don't want to fork out for a T3 downpipe for what could be 1 event. we then have a month off which gives us time to sort a hybrid T2.

Oh, and the head gasket. I now remember that when I put the head on I was not happy with the gasket (specifically where it has gone). I can't remember why, but I think it had some damage, but I was short of time so on it went. bum.

The problem with the T3, as you all know and have pointed out, was the high inertia. Coupled with that was the fact that the old engine was not a screamer and only pulled to 6200ish. The idea of the T2 was to give us more low down as out of hairpins you sometimes came off boost and lost lots of time.

The problem now I guess is we have a head capable of 7000+ and (ignoring the wrong T2) a turbo struggling in the high RPM. I would like to see it on a standard R5GT T2. We knew a hybrid would be best, but we had a budget so the cheep T2 option was the best idea.

If we have a .48 what is a R5GT out of interest?

I just need to add here that the 0.48 is the markings on the compressor NOT the turbine, which (if i'm correct is standard R5GT spec) I still don't know what trim the turbine has.

um surely if the turbine is too big ,it wouldnt make the boost ?

Its not as simple as that.

The thing you might be confusing is boost vs air flow.

10 psi on a t2 is not going to make the same power as 10 psi on say a t3.

I put up a post about the lack of T2 data nearly a year ago:

This needs resolving, but how?

My R5GT T2 is also fitted with the 0.48 Compressor.

Check this dimension Wil / Ben.

Easiest way if you have no internal calipers is to cut a piece of card out, and trim it so it 'just' fits into the bore, then measure it.

Also - check the unit out - make sure that the turbine housing isn't cracked; as it'd be dumping a lot of usefull energy. As an example - the turbine on the engine i've been running for the past two years is cracked to the point that it wouldn't get past 17psi - even with the actuator disconnected....

ah i see pete ,thank you ,my point was not really very well made ,it was that with a 10psi guage reading ,and the same rpm ,and the same engine ,the only diff in volume flow would be due to compressor efficiency change ,eg if the t2 was at 74 percent ,and the t3 at 70 or due to a change in ic,since nobody seems to have a map of the t2 ,you cant really say if 10 psi in a t2 situation with the same rpm and engine size and vol efficiency would actually be different to a t3 ,imo the t2 will prob flow about 17.5 lb of air at 15 psi ,so its map will prob be in the 1or 2 percent better than the t3 up to about 130 bhp, running the usual 2:1 surge to choke rule ,my point about the size of the turbine was that if the turbine was too big ,then the air speed through the housing would be insufficient to create the torque required to instigate compressor function ,thererby creating a lack of boost ,this hasnt been commented on by wil ben ,so i assumed that boost was forthcoming therefore the turbine was working at some point in the rpm range ,so at max power rpm ,max boost was attained so the lack of bhp was down to something else .hope thats a bit clearer .regards robert.

I think I see what you mean....

If it made the boost at the right times - its not the turbo.

Wil/Ben, Did you log boost v rpm?

We did no logging, my bro is the MS guy and he wasn't at the RR.

We will log at the weekend though (I guess) and report back.
