swapped my brakes over today, the car is a 73 and running a single line master cylinder with the valve thing on the rear subby. stock drums at the back but early metro 4 pots with solid discs up front.

We fitted my modded 8.4" setup to the front so that i can run on 10's again. Had to fit new brake pipes up front, both the flexi's and solids as twin lines had been run for the 4 pots rather than the conversion jobbies.

But now we cant get a decent brake pedal after bleeding them through, cant use my easybleed kit cos it doesn;t fit the master cylinder so it's all been done manually. The one problem we've found is the n/s/r wont bleed any fluid out. The brake still works and locks up the wheel but even with the nipple totally out it wont pass any fluid.

I'm going to change that rear cylinder in the morning incase its fucked, but does anyone else have any idea's what the problem could be? I've never worked on a single line system before and never even seen one the valve things on the rear subby.

got to get it working half decent so that i can get to work on monday morning...

Cheers, Nick. :)

Well - the answer lies in that rear corner...
Air will compress and move they cylinder to lock the wheel - but probably not enough that it'd pass an MOT to be honest.

well i took it round the block and the brakes are shite, pedal hits the deck and the car hardly slows down. there is some resistance in the pedal but i reckon there's a load of air trapped somewhere, more than likely in that rear corner. Lets hope i get it sorted in the morning, oh the joy of the circlip on the cylinder *angry*

out of interest anyone know how much these metro 4 pots with solid discs are worth? i've never seen a set for sale before so have no idea.

Being stupid, we spent an age trying to bleed ours after fitting 4 pot calipers on the front and replacing rear components, then the old man realised he had not adjusted the rear shoes. once done we were able to bleed it properly.

is the rear corner brake staying on after you release the pedal, if so your problem lies in the flexi if not i am no use

Tom's piss easy method for securing rear brake cylinder circlip.....

Fit new cylinder through backplate.

Get a decent sized pair of mole grips.

Clamp the mole grips onto the hub, between wheel studs. Position the grips "backwards" so that the release lever is towards you rather than the usual way round.

By doing this, the curved "other" side of the mole grips pushes the cylinder hard up against the back plate.

You now have two hands to put the clip on the cylinder, which is secured and not moving anywhere.

found another problem with the brakes last night, bled them all and re-adjusted and it was still a bit spongey. the fecking front flexi hose is bulging when you press the pedal.

i'm guessing this is why my back brakes feel like they're doing more than the front?

The thingy on the back subframe ! If you unscrew the end of it inside is a spring and plunger,if you drill and tap it and bung a bolt in it to compress the spring it works as a adjustable thingy so you can turn the rear braking force down

here ya go

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

change the front hose as this will fail you and is compounding the issue budd, check the other one as well

the proportion valve on the rear may be suspect also ?

the slave cylindar also

work through this problem logically

went to fit the new braided hoses tonight and its all gone to piss again.

bought the goodridge ones from minispares for 1984 on cars, but they dont fit my 1991 brake pipes *angry*

I'm reckoning that because my 1991 car had a servo as standard the brake fittings are fecking metric.
Going to head to minispares in the morning and see if i can get a banjo bolt for the o/s that fits the hoses, and then make up a new front brake pipe round the subby with a fitting on the n/s that fits the hose.
Anyone else ever had trouble fitting the braided hoses to a 90's car? It seems like one thing after another at the minute, not impressed *angry*

No, never had a problem at all. In fact, I find working on old minis a breeze, I never struggle with siezed bolts, stuck flywheels, rotten sills, fucked radius arms, or anything like that.
I'd hate to have a modern car where you can plug in a computer and have it tell you what is wrong, and then fix itself with a single press of a magic button.
