Im just curious to find out how some of you chaps torque up your flywheels? Obviously your putting a massive whack more torque through them than stock.

Previously i've just torqued them up to std specified torque, then slackened and re-torqued.

Anyone else for any more?

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

Hi,
Lapping the tapers is a good idea, you use fine grinding paste if my memory is correct?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I lap the tapers with fine paste, then clean off with thinners, repeat until all contact area is grey. I use EN24 keyed washer and bolt. Then small dab of thread lock on bolt and a tiny smear of oil under the head of the bolt - then torque up without lock tab to 170/180 lb/ft.

seems to work well

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

Lap, clean with acetone, pop in oven, heat to 180-degrees, drop on (with keyed wahser to locate), give a whack, then quickly wind the bolt in and torque up to 150 lb.

Once cooled, remove bolt, clean threads with acetone, loctite, and torque to 150lb ft.

Probably overkill, but it never shows any signs of coming off when it's not meant to.

All Ive ever done is,
1. degreased crank and flywheel,
2. torqued it up to 150lb,
3. shock the bolt with a copper mallet,
4. Repeat stage 2 and 3 untill it doesn't turn anymore
5. Bend tab washer over *wink*

Normally struggle to get the thing off. Lol

The flywheels was on there good and proper - but the bolt was only just tight!!

It came off normally though - I guess I was lucky lol.

Strange!!!! *oh well*

The last two times ive done mine Ive had to get a heat gun on it, and leave the puller on over night before it budges? The time before that I snapped the puller. Lol I must of been made of some cheap monkey metal!

the tab washers are made of monkey metal and should be binned as they will yield under the torque applied allowing the bolt to lose tension - leaving the potential for the flywheel to fret - thread locker is a much better engineering solution.

Cheers Sprocket. *smiley*

Seems to do the trick so far, although i'd like to get some better grade bolts and put a bigger piston in for a bit more push.

its suprising the pressure a £10 grease gun will make (about 10,000 psi) stick that into a 2" ram and bobs yer uncle.

I have to admit i am a little concerned what might happen if it was used on a fly wheel that was really stuck on, i guess the threads would pull out of the fly wheel or off the bolts.

Perhaps a product for SC??

I was reading Frost on the bog the other day and saw that their cheapo clarke grease gun was good for 345 bar, i thought it was a misprint!

350 bar is about 5000 psi, that sounds about right for the spec's i have seen for the cheap aluminium ones, the steel ones (only a couple of quid more) normally quote about 10000 psi.

this is the one i use,
