I picked up my new Mini yesterday. It needs a bit of work but hopefully it'll be a bright red hill climber complete with a 998 Turbo in time for ??????? (unlike the B.O.C I'm actually going to spend some of my wages on this one).

EDIT: Who knows when it will be finished.

A red track car hey .....

You must be the only person ever in the history of Mini's to buy a car because you have some paint left over .... LOL

*wink*

I've just bought a clubby too ..... for £150 and I could get an MOT on it next week I won't .... maybe next year ... or decade ... you know me!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

I made a bit of progress today:

Every thing we removed was filtered based on whether or not it was escential on the track, the significantly bigger not escential pile was then binned.

Next weekend the bulkhead box goes in, would have done it this weekend but I spent too much time sorting out the head on the British Open:

I managed to get the bulkhead box welded in last weekend, however it is some of the worst welding I've ever done, and I am embarrassed to even post this pic:

Then on Friday a massive box arrived for me in the post, I was hoping it was Miss July, but it wasn't, instead it was my new front end:

Then by contrast when I welded in the small 3" square to clear the actuator, yesterday I did some rather nice welds:

Not bad for a cheapo Clarke MIG if I say so myself.

Rob, what do you think to the front end?

Terry rang me today about my project and I was reminded just how good the ABS service is!

It's going to take a bit more fettling to fit that I expected, but then I've never fitted one before so maybe I set my hopes a bit high. I'm currently looking for pics of Will & Ben's clubby to see how they fitted their front.

Search on here for the link Turbo Dave posted to the Manchester Miinis site for flip front. Best mounting method I've seen to date.

Rob, the ABS front ends have a little extra material at the points where they join to the shell as there is no way of knowing what panels they will meet (genuine, pattern, standard of fitting etc.) and there is nothing that looks worse than a gap where there shouldn't be one!!!!!

Not a 5 minute job to fit but at least with one of ABS's it's likely to fit well when finished.

Had a bit of a destructive weekend; spun one car on Saturday & rolled one on Sunday.

Obviously no one was in the Mini when I rolled it (going to make welding the floor a lot easier) also no one was hurt when I spun, apart from my ego which was slightly bruised.

After finishing the MG last year I said I'd never do a bare shell again due to the work, but it seems I'm a gluten for punishment.

Here's a few pics of me posing for the camera:

To try and help keep every thing aligned when cutting out the footwells & sills, I welded in a few brace bars, I don't know if they'll help but I can't see them hurting.

Drivers footwell is gone, and I've got the new panel offered up, unfortunately I'm out of welding gas so it'll be a few days before I can do any more.

Here's one of my chief mechanic, who was a bit upset as I've banned him from the garage when I'm grinding or welding.

Took the old rusty sill off only to find the remains of the original sill underneath, the photo doesn't show it too well but about 50% of the original sill has been cut out & removed but the rest was left. Strangely the quality of the welding on the replacement sill was first class so it was obviously done by someone who knows what they are doing.

Test fitted the new sill, but I've got a look of work to do before I'm ready to weld in place, which is a shame as I enjoy welding.

lol ...... and I still have to build the other car anyway .... :) At least that one will be a turbo

Rob, whilst your doing the floor think about pipe routing and maybe even opening up the tunnel so we can sling the exhaust past the selector (unless your still thinking of internally mounting that).

A car with shafts level and 10" wheels is going to be low and hills are known not to be circuit smooth!!!!

I can't wait for you to finish the shell so we can get on with that motor ...... will be fun to take it for a spin .... lol :)

All pipes will be inside as will be the gear linkage.

I've got all of next week off to work on the shell.

I don't know what you mean about cracking on with the motor, I need you to weld in the climbing frame first.

Climbing frame is no problem. Do you have the deck chairs yet???? If so it would be useful to be able to test fit them at the same time as I'm guessing you will be mounting the Meastro column of the dash bar so well need to mock the whole driving position up to make sure we get it spot on for you.

So shopping list before I do your cage,

Pedal box and brake master (to get pedal height)

Drivers seat and mounts

Meastro column (I have one you can purchase *wink* )

Steering wheel and boss (again you can borrow my boss but best use the actual wheel you want.

Might be an idea if you have the harnesses your planning on using too as then we can make sure the mounting points go in before we can't get to the whole interior anymore.

Assuming Rollcentre cage ..... is the roof coming off or is it a few holes in the floor???? Can fit either way (holes in floor easiest ..... not like it's going to be a concourse champion .... well certainly not after it's first trip to the scenary!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

why oversills? (I know there are probably not old sills under them, but still its not the correct type....)

A variety of reasons really; there where over sills on it to start with, and the car was pretty botched underneath so I've had to hack out a fair bit more metal than I'd have liked, also it's my first Mini restoration (cut my teeth on an MG) so I'm learning as I'm going along.

How much weight saving to deck chairs give you over the more tradition bucket seats? and will they pass scrutiny?

Looks like I'll be going to Merlin Motorsport at some point

EDIT: Now been to Merlin

Yep, Rollcentre cage has now been ordered, it'll be a holes in floor job, it'll never be concourse with my welding although I'm allot better than the bodge monkey who originally rebuild (read ruined) the car, if I ever find out who it was I'll kill them.

A bit of progress, I have now finished the drivers side, new foot well, inner sill, outer sill, heal board repair, door step & panel I don't know the name of by the drivers feet.

It's not pretty but at least it's solid and that's what counts.

If flipped the car over yesterday and started on the passengers side, whilst the drivers side had two outer sills, the passengers side has two inner sill, good to see there is a bit of variety in the car!
