If they still gap correctly then I don't see why not ....

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

If they are tempered they are for the bin, unfortunately the only way I know to test this kills rings!

You twist the ring, if it breaks it was a goodun and it you bend it it's for the bin.

Always thought re-using was a no no. At 1500 miles, they are already bedded in to that certain engine bore....surely?

well with the wearing in thing at least i being nieve at that time did not hone the bore and just put the rings on the pistons so really they should not be bedded in at all as there were no hone marks in the bores

I know this thread is going back a while, but I have just landed myself a good set of second hand pistons that have apparantly convered 40,000 miles

I will get the block honed. But is it necessary to go for new rings even if the originals gap correctly, or will they not bed in proporly to the new bore.

New std rings seem to be a bit of a bugger to get hold of, so if I don't need to source some then thats one less thing to worry about.

Any knowledge gratefully recieved.

Hi,
Having done 40,000 I'd replace them, no question. It's a major job to replace them if they don't bed in or fail shortly after.
You should be able to get new rings from total seal, Fab posted a pic of the AE packet for the std rings and I think there's a post some where about where to get new rings from...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Thanks for the replies. I did expect to replace them to be honest but thought I'd double check.

with regards to the ring set detailed in that thread I already have some part number R35960. I have mic'd them up and fitted one of the compression rings and they are about 0.1mm to thin. I will ring them to make sure though.

looks like total seal are the way forwards. failing everything I will just fit the original rings and hope for the best. The engine will only need to cover about 15,000 miles before a propor monster engine goes in.

I may stick a wanted add up in case someone has some rings buried in the shed.
