Ok well the situation is this.

i put my new engine in (only 1330 n/a atm) and the new mk 3 loom and everything was going swell as we just replaced like for like. i didn't take any of the fusebox clips off when i took it out of the old shell so that was just screwing back in place.

now what happens is a bit confusing basically i have wired up the solenoid as per peoples that i looked at when down in bringhton which is starter cable on inside (wing) everything else engine side and the clips on the relevant spades.

now if i connect the battery my dash lights come on with no key which is odd. if i turn the key the solenoid clicks but does nothing. so i take the battery out and try jumping the starter off off the battery using cables and nothing still (not even a spark, yet the clips spark when touched together), which is odd as when i take the starter out it spins like a starter should.

so what could be causing the lights coming on pre ignition in key? and why is it not turning? i haven't really done that much appart from replace like for like on the loom?

things i have done

1, new battery (uprated)
2, new solenoid
3, tested started out of the car
4, have a good earth (from flywheel casing to inner wing)

has anyone got some ideas as to why i am getting these difficulties?

thanks in advance

Smells to me like an incorrect connection n the starter solenoid, can you post up a picture of how you have it connected.

Hi,
Unplug the alternator, see if that fixes the ignition lights on without the key.
Check the earth cable on the battery.
Try bridging the 2 studs on the sol with a big spanner see if it turns over.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

thanks gav for help

1, will this do anything. if it does whats the initial problem?

2, this is brand new so i think is ok.

3, i done this but we think there maybe some internal issue with the starter whereby it has enough power to turn it over out of the car but inside its to week to do anything.

Hi,
1 if this fixes the ignition light problem, could well be the alternator's knackerd.
2 check for good clean tight connections.
3 When testing starter off the car get an assistant to stand on the starter and then jam a long piece of wood againest the pinion see if you can stop it turning. If you can buy a new starter.
Cheers,
Gavin :)
