you need a 36-1 trigger wheel. I guess the one originally on the SPI is not.

It isn't.... But - Evo will probably have some input here as he wrote a code for the Stock Rover flywheels (K-series)...

PM him and point him to this question. I too would be interested in the answer :)

You'd have to write new code for the EDIS unit... and that would be impressive!

Oh - my bad. If you had a MS2 it could be done for sure...

Hi,
I think the SPi is 36 -1 -1.
So you could just add an extra tooth to the relector. The reluctor is removable too *wink*

Gavin :)

Actually, the SPi wheel cannot be used for dizzy-less ignition because it has 2 missing teeth that are 180 degrees apart making it impossible to know which cylinder to fire. With a distributor, it's not a problem because it takes care of sending the spark to the correct cylinder.

Hi,
Jean, surely if you put a tooth back in then it'll be 36-1? Job done?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Of course, if you can put a tooth back then it's a 36-1 and you can use as any other 36-1. You may need to reposition it if you want to use an EDIS module if the standard SPi wheel is not in the correct position (I have no idea what the position of the missing teeth are on the SPi). If you're going with MS2 (or another aftermarket ECU) then you just need to specify where the missing tooth is.

As said if you want the SPi to work with EDIS you need to make sure the missing tooth is 90 degrees before TDC.

Theres also the issue of different sensors - EDIS is designed to work with a certain senor. The SPi one is visually totally different to the Ford one. The SPi on has the teeth passing around the sensor where as the Ford one has teeth passing across one face.

This might not be a major issue, but as the sensor is of the Inductive type any difference in construction will effect the voltage produced by the sensor. If this is not in the range the EDIS can read then it simply wont work.

Its probably more hassle than its worth on a SPi as the front pulley is easy to modify.... an MPi is a different story though.

Hi,
That's true, I did think about the sensor, wonder if the resistances are similar?

I would be VERY surprised if the Rover VR sensor didn't work; they are all much of a muchness as regards what they do. Only thing you could get wrong is the polarity - ECU's can be sensitive to this, so it is likely the EDIS is aswell.
I reckon it'd be easy to figure out.
Sprox has shown previously how to remove and re-orient the reluctor (sp?) ring in the flywheels.

All you have to do is get the engine to 90-degrees before, then remove the current sensor and (through the sensor hole) mark the position on the flywheel with a sharpie, or a scraped line with a screwdriver, pin punch dimple, whatever....

Now just remove the flywheel, re-orient the ring, adding another tooth/teeth if needed, and off you go!

This sounds like a good solution to me...

Hi,
For an SPi, you're problably right, as a standard damper with 36-1 will do fine. Mpi is a whole different ball game...
