I have fitted the mini spares turbo clutch http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=32713

but it still slips, the pressure plate seems to be really weak when depressing the clutch pedal. the bite point is not far from the floor.

Could i have been given the wrong kit?

Has anyone else got this kit? Did the clutch plate have springs?

I would have thought a turbo clutch would not have any springs.

any help apreciated:)

Hi,
You won't get a Verto clutch that can handle 14psi, unless you make a Robert special.
As Iain said you'll have to measure it.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I'm still learning about turbos so excuse my stupidity.
But why cant a clutch handle the power if say 81 bhp is gained from 8psi and say 100bhp is gained from 14psi, surely some 1275s can chuck out 100 bhp even on 6psi of boost.

I thought it depended on the power?

So i really need to get a pre verto clutch set up?

It's all about torque, not power.

The maximum torque that that clutch can handle is about 90 lbft.

Your turbo engine is probably putting out around 100 lbft.

Ahh! I see! Cheers Axel.

I just spoke to MiniSpares aswel, he recommended i convert to pre verto also.

What parts do i need? has anyone got any pics of a set up? there seems to be a lot of parts compared to the verto!!!

How much is this likely to cost?

Cheers
Chris

Does this mean that my clutch is an upgraded item? It was on the car when I got it and I've not had it apart yet.

I've run 15psi (and enough torque to break the gearbox) with no slipping at all.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

This should help.

Budget for about £300 if you buy new bits.

Or you could make up a double verto if you have access to some machine tools.

Its a long thread, but gets useful on about page 3.

or there is stu gurr's uprated verto is there not?
that would handle that kind of power and torque i'd say.

to be honest a good standard verto should.

if you are thinking of uping the power though go for verto at this moment in time.

Uprated verto not really up to the job from what I've seen, ask Benross.

ah but for 100curly wurlys and bananas it would be. just thinking if he's not going up in power with it being a 998 it would save the change to the non-verto and be kinder on thrusts.

Right i have decided to go down the pre verto route.
I have one problem tho, i may not be able to use the pre-verto slave and longer arm. due to the downpipe being in the way from the custom turbo location.

see pic

can a verto slave and arm be used with a pre-verto clutch set up? (i did a search and couldn't find what i'm after BTW)

I could sell my verto set up whole as its nice and new lightened flywheel to offset the cost of the preverto stuff.

any thoughts?

The Janspeed turbo conversion used a turbo over the clutch and as a result there was no space for the slave cylinder.
There solution was to fabricate a bracket to mount the slave to the petrol pump/oil return studs and extend the pushrod to meet the pre verto operating arm. This meant you only needed about 12mm between the clutch housing and the turbo/exhaust.
Might help in your set up.
I am fairly sure I have seen a picture on here.

Dave

Yes if you search "janspeed turbo" on here you will get to see the bracket and pushrod, the slave is not fitted but I am sure you will get the idea.

Dave

Echo! toms and danboy thoughts

that looks a nice motor chappers worth of the upgrade

iain you may be right buddy but i think chappers may well go for bigger cc in the future maybe!

and he still has all the parts

the lightend parts will spin the motor up so well

Right i literally had a dream about the problem last night, yes i even dream about minis!!! LOL

Iam going to use the preverto clutch arm and slave cylinder, but make a plate that holds the slave and bolts to the exising holes on the transfer case, but moves the slave furether away from the arm thus clearing the manifold and downpipe, and just cut sleeve and weld the rod from the clutch arm.

Will draw it up on Solidworks and post up the result.

Please excuse the crudity of the model, but you get the jist.

i'll just step the slave cylinder back enough to clear manifolds. not as extreme as Janspeed's 80's conversion.
