Hi guys
i am planning on supercharging my mini, and i have seen alot of different opinions on ECU's.
I have pretty much got it down to the two main ECU's:
MegaSquirt V3
Emerald M3D

i like the emerald one because of the switch you can have on the dash but i don't like the 800 pound fitting and tuning cost, but on the other hand i'm not sure on the megasquirt one because if you can make it yourself then it does not sound like a good choice for supercharging, i'm not sure so i thought ask you guys which ones you run, or which one you would use

Why if you build it yourself does it not sound like a good option for supercharging?

also you can buy ones from people that are already built. i think someone on here does them??

i think you'll find that most on here run megajolt (same as squirt just less the injection side of things basically)

Hi,
Are you injecting at the inlet port or the throttle body?
Nothing wrong with building your own ECU if you have the skills to do it.
Same applies for fitting and tuning.
There's nothing wrong with MS, but if you can build an ECU I'd go for a VEMS comes mostly assembled and from europe so no import duties so worry about.
Automotive spec connectors on it too.
Sprocket is running one on his Spi, I'm about to order mine.
It will only work on TBi, if you want MPi you'll need to go for MS with the code that Paul S is about to test.
What's the switch on the dash do?
If it's for boost control, you can have that on just about any ECU...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

and the rest..........

by the time you have bought the ECU, all the sensors, enough wiring and relays etc, you'll have spent the thick end of £1000.

Then you need it mapping, another £200 odd.

"i like the emerald one because of the switch you can have on the dash" what switch?? if its the one to switch between map's then megasquirt and im sure vems, can do this aswell.

i know one coudl argue im biased because i run megasquirt, but given the interest and development of the siamese port injection code going on on here, with all the information out in teh open, i'd be going megasquirt!

If your not injecting then there is no need to use any like Megasquirt or Emerald. Meajolt is just over £100 for the unit and will do everything you need on a carb'd engine.

well it is for my MPI mini, so is megasquirt just as good as the emerald system except half the price?

Never compare Megasquirt with Emerald. Im sure Dave Walker would be quick to point out the difference*wink*

You buy Emerald, you buy expertise at the end of a phone*wink*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

But surely that is the point, without taking sides...

One is very DIY (to the point you can actualy solder it all together yourself (as I have chosen to do) and the others come with supplier support.
The DIY one comes with a large community who will help with the hardware and a very much smaller group of people who want to make it work on the 5 port "A" series.

As far as I can tell, the more "mainstream" ones get Supplier support but, from what I've read, that seems mainly targettted towards those persuing more exotic solutions, ie, 8 port BMW or Bike heads. I have yet to see a mainstream supplier offering an EMS that works on a siamesed 5 port head ???

Please, someone, prove me wrong.

there is a bigger picture, in simple terms:

If a customer asked me to fit an aftermarket ecu to there car it would be an e-manage, Apexi PFC,emerald etc i would advise AGAINST a megasquirt.

If i was to fit antoehr aftermarket ecu to another of my cars it would be a megasquirt, without doubt. And i would advise anyone with an enthusiastic DIY mindset to do similar..

features and support are exellent for both, but it is not that simple, your statement comes across as bashing the megasqurit unit, im not going to get into an argument about which is best, as it goes nowhere, each to there own and all that, but if your going to rubbish megasquirt for the application of port injection on an a-series over emerald, please state some reasoning rather than name dropping.

Going to be in the same place as the orginal MPi manifold sitting on the top of the runners

This is an emotive issue and having made the decision to go with a particular ECU then we like to think we have made the best decision.

My experience with Megasquirt has been largely without problem. I bought a built unit from Bill Shurvinton. He custom built it so that I could initially run just ignition with EDIS on the standard MS code and then convert it to direct connected VR sensor and coils for running the MS2/Extra code.

It has been relatively simple and if I needed help from Bill, I always got an answer to my emails within 24 hours.

I joined the MS forums. Like TM, the forum knowledge database for MS is huge. You usually find an answer with a quick search. Not suprising when there are thousands of units in use. I have posted once on the forum, just to tell them that it is working.

In a single weekend, I installed my EFI system, setup the MS2/Extra code and was driving the car the following weekend. No need for a "mapper", no rolling road, just an ECU code that does a brilliant job, in my opinion.

Hi,
I think this post proves a point. There's more than one way to skin a cat.
How you skin your cat is going depend on which ECU offers the features you need and how much of it you want to do / pay for :)
Cheers,
Gavin :)
