Fiber Glass Front End and VIN Plate

Alright guys,

I would appricate anyones experience on this...

I just wondered if anyone ever looked into this ? but when I fitted my front end, I simply relocated my vin plate onto the bulkhead,

When I took it for an MOT it was fine.

Is this legal or should I have had this blessed by the police, DVLA or something ?

BTW - I took my buddy VTEC Pete out for a spin this weekend, and even though I am running her in, he gave it a name, the "Brocket"...cause I'm a brocket maaannn, nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah....

It's legal as far as I know, I don't think you actually need a VIN plate as long as it's stamped into the shell. Just checked the MOT manual it says you can have either, nothing about where

My Mini build diary

It is perfectly legal. You do neet to have both though as I failed an mot sometime back for no vin plate. It needs to be easily accessable and clearly readable. It does not event have to be the original type for the car. It can been brass or aluminium. Hope that helps

dont even know where my vin plate is i think its in the loft i suppose i should find it sometime

I have nothing showing any numbers anywhere, not even on the engine, passes fine everytime, mind you the mot guy knows me well and if he flags anything he says, theres the tools, sort it out.

Next mot should be fun tho, as it's been a while for anything, I have my work cut out. Although luckily since it's a '71 I don't have to worry about emmisions

Is the VIN number the one on the scuttle?

If you dont need both, I wont fork out £30 getting a plate made up which i've just been quoted!

If not i'll leave it and see how the test goes in the next week or so.

Apparently they don't have to have them if the car is pre 1980.

Get a bit of stainless plate and stamp your chassis number into it with a set of hand stamps, the rivet it on somewhere, perfectly legal and I've done the very same myself in the past, job done.

Minimail sell the correct stamped plates. If I was to buy a car with a home made Vin-plate.. I'd walk away.

Rich it's stamped into the shell on the edge of the panel the wiper arms mount on in the edge where the bonnet closes. (Scuttle panel)
The Aluminium plate goes where the bonnet catch is (slam panel)

Ahh right cheers Bat.

Its just a pain really, I got quoted £30 to get one all stamped up and sent back, you gotta send the logbook itself and a bill with your name and address on it!

If I can just make one out of stainless and be ok with it then i'll defo go for that option! Will be on the bulkhead though ive got a 1-piece front end!

How come they charge so much for such a small thing? Theres no "official" price of these surely? You can get the plates for £3 might aswell stamp them yourself but it may be obvious.
