mini spares +0.040 mega piston failure!!!!

just built engine run in for about 400 miles at 6psi, went to mikeanics at congleton on wed , (he did a really good job) but after driving 60 miles home steadily, then bootin for a a mile or so saw a bit of blue smoke, and oil leaking from breather just stripped engine down to find big chunks of ringlands on piston broken on no2 cylinder. anyone had any experiences of this before? :(

are these the 22357 +40's

if so i used to run a set of 22357 in +20 and i found them to be bullet proof my pistons was about 10 y/o at the time, i cant recall and failures from the research i did a year ago, however maybe there has been a new batch or 2 since then

If they are the Mega pistons then YES.. Hoggy took out 3 sets I took out 2 sets and there are others I believe.. All lost the lands..

I think we can safely say that there is a batch of badn's out there at the Mo..

thanks t2 , ye brett they are 22357 + 40 s must be faulty batch out there, tel did you or hogster get anywhere with minispares over them? just found 2 more are cracked but held together!. very dissapointed, are accralites the way forward.

Yes sorry to hear that, yes hoggy had just brough a set of accralites, it's the only way, or any other make of pistons.

yep i have had4 fail out of 8 pistons gone to accrilite now so fingers crossed.

had several conversations with gary and gav who sent mine of of to ae and they said they were ok.

but i think they are just crap to be honest.

best of with accrilite or if money is tight then cast omegas will do.

omegas also do the job

i have been planning on getting Megas, i heard alot of good things about them but if they fail with 6psi then i deff need to get somthing else. money is quite tight so how good at cast omegas?

Omega are A superb!! piston and i have never heard of any failures on this forum with them ... even with 18+ psi

Remember.... all the power the engine EVER makes is above the piston.

i think a bad batch has got in here with the megas for some reason

Yes there absolutely are confirmed reports that the Mega pistons are fine and take all kinds of abuse and that was exactly why I chose them in the first place.

However it seems that over the last 18 months or so something has changed and they seem to be dropping lands at an alarming rate. Of course any piston will drop a land if abused enough and in my case they were probably over advanced when the first set went on the R/R but the second time I was running 8psi with an intercooler, fueling was fine and I had a conservative advance curve yet the buggers did it again.. NO sign of detonation on the tops of any of the 8 pistons.


OK the Accralites cost about twice the price and your wallet hurts but I would say that when you add up the total cost of rebuilding an engine, the extra 200 quid is a drop in the oil puddle.

Wish I had thought of that 500 quid and 2 rebuilds ago!

i take it yours? i have been recomended the megas by a few people neil as one of them and alll i have heard is good things, but as more and more people are saying they are failing i may as well just go for omegas. cheers for the info fellas its always helpful :)

Just for the record, no problems with my omega cast pistons that have been in since 2000 and covered about 20,000 miles. No undercrown cooling and currently 18psi.

i have been looking for +40 omegas for a while today and all i have found is +20's do they only go up to +20 for omegas?
