hi there i had a set of smiths three dial gauges in my 1977 clubman which worked great for a couple of months but then i noticed that my revcounter stoppped working so i took my dashboad off and tested the connections which seemed fine so after hours of trying to figure it out i came to the conclution that my clocks were past it. I searched ebay and managed to find a set of magnolia cooper s clocks (nippon)after the seller reassuring me that they worked fine hed just written off his car. But the recounter on these dosent work and surly 2 sets of clocks cant be nakered any1 got any ideas please help its really bugging me lol.

Done now needs redoing lol

Your wiring is fucked mate.
Unfortunately there is no way we can diagnose a wiring fault of this kind without testing all your earths, feeds and connections

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Most likely the wiring, but aren't the later S clocks off an MPi and hence different.

It's not uncommon to have knackered clocks, rev counters especially. However, the revcounter is one of the hardest things to check what's wrong if you only have a multi-meter. You need a scope and a suitable sig gen.

I'd try running a new feed for 12V and the coil signal first off.

I think the newer clocks won't work with your car.

Anyhow, I'd check the wiring onto the coil for a start. Its quite common for the wire to break at the spade connectors. Next step will be to get the test leads out and start tracing

OK then

First set it to volts, check you have battery voltage supply to the rev counter

Now set it to ohms, check there is a good earth by measuring across to a good earth point on the car body.

Finally measure the black/white wire from behind the clocks to the negative side of the coil, this should be LOW resistance.
