I would think it depends what is in the hose. Water could go closer than air. Never had one closer than about 25mm though so apart from that pearl of wisdom, I have no idea!

I don't think I'd be keen on 5mm without some sort of shield.

i guess you mean in case it melts. my samco extreme (higher heat resistance) seems fine so far with about 2mm gap

Mine is about 10mm and has been for years. It's a bit discoloured, but otherwise solid.

yes nick, obviously this turbo wasnt meant to run in this orientation, its about 8 mm from its own flanges, its on now anyway fettled and filed (yes it took ages lol)
i have about 10 mm and its a boost pipe jamie so carries air, no biggie if it melts but a ball ache im trying to prevent whilst i have the chance

I have had to heat wrap both the I/C pipe and the air inlet to the compressor with the way I have oriented the GT17.

Even with a 25mm gap it melted the inlet hose, which was spiral wrap stuff (so not very heat resistant)

I,d rather not take the risk of losing boost on a longer trip, even if it no longer looks as neat.

i have an IC pipe touching the jubilee clip which is also wedged between the turbo flange. so i have NO GAP. i have some blackening of the IC pipe but no hole as of yet. and its been like that for about 4months, it did also set on fire too (because of oil on the turbo) and its still going strong *happy*

Genuine samco or any other proper silicone hose is supprisingly heat resistant, if I have some under 10mm from a manifold I usually just make a wee double skinned stainless heat shield, usually works a bit nearer than wrap :)

Silicone look-a-like hose I crap though and doesn't take heat well :(

thatll be fine, however, if you get some thin stainless/aluminuim (cat heat shield of a scrap car *wink*) and fold it over and tuck a bit under that jubilee clip you will have a heat shield, just incase :)
